This book is the beginning of Jack Aubrey's captaincy, and the start of physician Stephen Maturin's tenor as a naval surgeon. Jack is made captain of the Sloop, Sophie. In his excitement at finally being made captain, Aubrey seeks out Maturin, with whom he had an unpleasant meeting with the previ...

The Basics Jack Aubrey has just recently gotten his first command aboard the Sophie, and as luck would have it, he also just met Dr. Stephen Maturin, a perfect fit for ship’s surgeon. Adventure ensues but so do some difficulties. Jack isn’t good at playing the social game that is required of offic...

I've read the entire series and loved each and every one. No one better captures the sea and the age. And what a wonderful pairing of characters, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. I wish they would hurry up and fade from memory so I could start the series all over again.

Several of my friends are big fans of the Aubrey/Maturin series of naval adventures set in the Age of Sail that starts with this book. This book is very valuable insofar as it has taught me to respect the society of men the way I would respect the circle around a chained-up rabid dog. Usually it seemed like the men were always criticizing each other behind one another's backs and this usually arose from something like “he has sligh...

Really not sure what the fuss about this book/series is about. Ah, well.

Well-written, engrossing, and dryly amusing. While I tired of the vast amounts of nautical nomenclature, O'Brian did a good job of filling the reader in. This was generally accomplished by having Captain Jack Aubrey and others explain what was happening to physician Stephen Maturin. Maturin is the f...

I got a lot of enjoyment from reading this book, though a lot of the sailing jargon went over my head. Nevertheless, I'm glad I finally took the time to read this. I'll take the series one book at a time, and as long as I'm still enjoying them, I'll keep reading.
