While author Patrick O'Brian had never been a sailor, he did do a lot of meticulous research about boats and the 19th century British navy. Unfortunately, he felt the need to dump every bit of that research into his debut novel. Instead of picking and choosing which details were relevant, and whic...

Wish I could find a cover image for this edition!!!The only thing stopping me from giving this 5 stars was that I found the first couple of CDs - the 'before we got to sea' bits - quite tedious. I also thought it ended quite abruptly. Apart from these minor quibbles, I found this book quite marvelou...

It was a slow-moving book, but the incredibly slashy subtext between the captain and his doctor made up for it all.

Master and Commander begins English author Patrick O'Brian's lush and literary epic seafaring historical fiction series based on the career of a naval captain during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Through out the entire series O'Brian delves into the themes of love, war and friendship. At the hear...
