My dad had said he didn't like Mickey Spillane, and now I know why. Mike Hammer, Mickey's alter ego, is a thoroughly despicable human being. He is violent, is a killer without remorse, has no moral compass that I can see, and is odiously sexist. Were it not for the despicable nature of the protagoni...

Mike Hammer is one tough dude! No wonder many of today's mystery writers refer to him and Mickey Spillane's books. Hammer has his license and with that, his gun pulled early on so he does all his work by hand, fighting his way through a maze of corruption, the Mafia. Published in 1953 and not know...

Not a bad collection, but not the best one I've read. I liked about half the stories, found most of the rest just 'ok' and completely disliked one. Still, there are a few here that I'll probably re-read again in the future when I'm looking for a quick Supernatural fix.

I used to be fond of the short-mystery-with-a-twist story; I don't know if I outgrew them or this collection just wasn't very good, but after the first four stories I felt no inclination to read on.

I went through this phase in high school where I just inhaled super macho men's thrillers. Mostly I alternated between Clive Cussler and Mickey Spillane, with some Stephen Hunter thrown in for variation. As a result, I'm super sentimental about all three authors even though it's been more than a d...

I've only read 3 stories - the Charlaine Harris, which is the one I got the book out of the library for, and 2 others that seemed well recommended by other reviewers. I found the sheer number of stories in this book quite daunting, and therefore didn't really bother dipping into any others at all. I...

Boy this book was so long! I kept wishing it would end so I could move on to another book. These long anthologies are not a good idea. I averaged my ratings and it came to 3.2 stars, which I'll call 3 stars for simplicity's sake. :) Overall the book was pretty good, some really great stories, s...

This is the first "grown-up" mystery I read when I was growing up. My grandpa gave me a copy of it when I was about 10 and I was hooked for good!!

This was like most of these anthologies, some good, some not so much. When you add in the fact that most of the writers don't write "woo woo", as it's called in the foreword, it gets a little more iffy. Charlaine Harris' story was very good. It was another look at the bombing of the Rhodes hotel....
