Every anthology is a mixed bag, especially when the stories are collected from many authors. Luckily, this is a very nice mix overall. I can't think of a single story that I really disliked, and most of the stories were quite good. For me, the two best were Tanith Lee's The Puma's Daughter and Peter...

I'm a big fan of Terri Windling, and make an effort to seek out her anthologies. Thus, I got this one. I'd heard rave reviews of it - people saying "This is the one that made a difference in my life!"I was a bit quizzical about that, because for me, that was 'Bordertown.' And for me, it remains Bord...

This is the second time that I have read this book. The stories aren't bad, but overall they aren't memorable. The only story that I remembered with any clarity before re-reading this was the story by M. Shayne Bell, "The Pagodas of Cilorine", a wonderful tale about Ravel and his childhood. The s...

I said somewhere recently that I had never given a multi-author collection of short stories anything more than three stars. Here, I will make that statement false. It's just that usually there is too much comme ci, comme ça in any given collection. But I hadn't read a Ellen Datlow/Terri Windling col...

Some of these essays I loved, some less so, and some I think I just didn't get, but overall a really fascinating and valuable collection.

"UOUS" by Tanith LeeRichly atmospheric but ultimately unsatisfactory story of Cinderella-like Lois, whose labors for her abusive stepmother are interrupted by demands from supernatural creatures in the forest. The fact that the family was in a dilapidated house in the forest in the first place was k...

This was really different from all others in the genre. Instead of telling the story from the perspective of the "main" players in the narrative, it tells the story from the perspectives of two fae who are now "fat, old women" who may as well be invisible to society. At first I was all, "ehhh?" but ...

I think I'm quitting this book. It's boring, it's confusing and I can't get into it. I have yet to care about one character, and since they all have 2 or 3 names (human, fairy and "secret") I'm not sure I even have them straight. You shouldn't have to work this hard for a book unless it's a classic.

I'll be reviewing this one in full via my blog ASAP.For now...The beginning was very engaging, the middle was GREAT. THe end, however, felt tedious. The author's excelled in developing the two fey sisters. The other characters were flat in comparison, but I found that as long as one of the sister's ...
