***Note: this review assumes that you've read the book.*** First the good. I admire what Marcus Sedgwick is attempting with Midwinterblood. I'm glad that he took his time with it, and didn't dash off a "YA look-alike with a familiar hook" (which some paranormal, dystopia, contemporary guy-books, e...
A series of interlocked stories taking the reader back through time and through the recurring lives of two characters on an island called Blessed, somewhere in the far North Sea. Very cool. I was charmed by the idyllic island itself, by the overtones of The Wicker Man, the hare motif, and how the st...
Find this review at Great Imaginations!I owe a huge thanks to Wendy Darling over at The Midnight Garden for this recommendation. I wanted to read it when I read the description (Vikings) and she really pushed hard for this one. I can see why she was such a strong advocate for this book.Even though...
Not sure if I should give it 3 or 4 stars. I may go back and change that later on.I've got mixed feelings about this book. The theme and story itself were deeply intriguing, and exactly the kind of thing that tends to fascinate me in a book. I liked how it started with the end, then went back throug...
This was a wonderfully written, creepy book with interesting echoes of British myth. It really worked in a way that Sedgwick’s White Crow didn’t quite work for me. Now, I did think the ending was a little off, but overall definitely recommended, for older fans of Susan Cooper especially.
Midwinterblood was better than White Crow because the pay-off didn't make you feel quite as duped. You could see it coming, but the how and the individual characters that make up the how were more compelling than in White Crow. Sedgwick does get a bit heavy handed at the end, in an apparent but need...
I have been thinking on this review for a while. I usually like to write my reviews within a few days of finishing a book, but I couldn't quite figure out my feelings about this book. I did like it, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. The writing and how each story linked to one another was be...
Midwinterblood is difficult to describe without giving details away, so I will keep my review brief. The story begins in 2073 with journalist Eric Seven going to a mysterious island to write about what he finds. But Eric Seven's story is only one of many which are detailed in the book, all which are...
Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick was a book that had me up in the middle of night, well after finishing it. It is a love story that truly transcends time, and in the end was one of the most romantic reads I’ve read.I will admit, when I first started reading Midwinterblood, I was confused. It star...
