The author's first novel. Miss MacIntosh hails from What Cheer, Iowa and is a regular girl possessing an incorruptible sense of humor and the desire to put an end to phantoms. Other characters include Catherine Cartwheel, the opium lady, a recluse who is shut away in a great New England seaside house and entertains imaginary guests; Mr. Spitzer, the lawyer, musical composer and mystical space traveler; his twin brothers, the raffish gambler and virtuoso in the world of sports; Cousin Hannah, the horsewoman, balloonist, mountain-climber and military Boston feminist; Titus Bonebreaker of Chicago, wildman of God dreaming of a heavenly crown; the very efficient Christian hangman, Mr. Weed, and others. Young's brief biography describes her as one who, "derives from Brigham Young", but was born in Indiana, traveled extensively, taught, wrote poetry and prose, and at one time in the Gare Lazare in Paris, lost seven suitcases of manuscript. They were retrieved by seven men from Cook's with seven wheelbarrows!
