How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?’ Winston thought. ‘By making him suffer,’ he said. ‘Exactly. By making him suffer. Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own? Power is in inflicting pain and humiliati...

When I first read this book I actually hated it despite how well written and groundbreaking it was. To say why would spoil the ending but now that I'm older and can appreciate it for what it is, this is easily one of those books that will always stick with me. The whole 'Big Brother' concept actuall...

The main character in 1984 is Winston Smith. Winston can remember a time before Big Brother and the Party that eventually comes into power that rules what people say and even think. Winston as a character goes from heartbreaking (when rembering his mother) to vaguely repulsive (listening to his init...

In Winstons Welt gibt es keine Gesetze, es gibt nur Regeln. Wer sich nicht an die Regeln hält verschwindet und jeder Hinweis auf seine Existenz wird vollständig gelöscht, als habe dieser Mensch nie existiert. The novel begins with Winston Sm...

A frightening look at the dangers of total government control, the loss of freedom of speech and thought, and the importance of continuing this discourse before it happens to us. Some might say it already has, but this book shows how terrible it really can be.“He who controls the past controls the ...

Better (for me) as an audio book than reading it myself. The narrator sets a driving rhythmic pace that suits Winston's tendency to mental lists. Not much else to say really. It's a classic, but will never be one of my favourite books.

After reading Animal Farm I wanted to pick this book up however I never got around to reading it so when I found this at my used book store I had to pick it up. I really enjoy Orwell's writing the way he presents his worlds are so intense, wonderful and down right mesmerizing. It's safe to say tha...

I realize that I'm "supposed" to love this because it's a classic, but I didn't. Don't get me wrong, I liked it and I'd still recommend it.
