I had relatively low expectations for this book, as I'd attempted to watch the BBC special before and found it pretty dull. But the the book itself (actually the audiobook) was a very different experience. While I found myself feeling a bit impatient with the heroine and perhaps sympathising a bit m...
It is simply too warm to write a decent review. I just want to say that this book has a warm-fuzzy-feeling ending on par with Jane Eyre. Also that I love it when the characters are actually develop themselves in span of the story.
I mostly listened to this (Librivox, version 2), but read the last few chapters, because of time constraints. Also, I wanted to actually read the final love scene. A bit of a disappointment actually -- after all that longing, so short! She wrote whole chapters on strikes and religion, love could've ...
"As I mentioned above, I chose this particular novel because it is considered her best. Having never read anything by Ms. Gaskell prior to this tour, I wanted to make sure that I was focusing on one that would allow me to enjoy all of her talents. I was definitely not disappointed by what the book...
Four stars for a work of fiction that is set in a world which can still resonate with the events in the world today, characters who have meaningful conversations/arguements and the lovers have a happy ending.I might have given it five stars if the ending hadn't been so abrupt and there had been a be...
So, in clearing the decks for NaNoWriMo, I tried to crash-read NORTH AND SOUTH by Elizabeth Gaskell, and, no surprise, it didn't work. Gaskell’s writing demands a slow read, tasting all her clear phrases and cogent observations. And I know I said this earlier about MARY BARTON, but it reads so darn ...
I waited sometime after reading this book to figure out what I thought of it, but I'm still not sure. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I think I was subconsciously comparing it to Wives and Daughters, which was my first Gaskell read - and so far, my favorite.North and South started out...
OK, I want to preface this review by saying that there is a very good chance that poor timing has caused me to not enjoy this book as much as I probably would have otherwise. I chose to read this immediately after finishing the ridiculously fast-paced and, I'll admit, addictive Twilight series, thin...
A fun classic, a la 'Jane Austen' style - Margaret Hale, the heroine, can't help herself from falling in love with a man that she originally despises. One item that made this book a bit more interesting was all of the discussion of Northern England at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Un...
Various friends, bloggers and professors have been nagging me to read North and South, and eventually while talking about the mini-series on Twitter, Gail of Ticket to Anywhere decided to fix this problem by hosting the North and South read-a-long. I cannot believe I waited this long to read this no...
