England famously succumbed to both the wealth generated – and the overwhelming suffering and degradation caused – by industrialization, and it is this which forms the foundational conflict of North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. Seen through the eyes of her compassionate but haughty protagonist Margaret Hale, the poor are depicted with unflinching realism and detail, while the tension between worker and foreman is tempered by the love – very much in the vein of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy – which blossoms between Margaret and John Thornton, a local mill owner who was born in poverty, yet grew prosperous with hard work and ambition.

3.0 North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
I have been curious about reading Gaskell for a while, and my first novel of hers turned out to be this one that mixes romance with social issues relevant to its time in the mid-19th century. The main character, Margaret Hale, initially seems rather contradictory to me. She is the daughter of a coun...
