As a kiwi living in Sweden (the precise opposite of the author, a Swede who lives in New Zealand), I read this with a lot of interest. I think I damaged it with my own overly high expectations, but it was a good read. Possibly even a 4, if I hadn't gone in expecting so much from it.Having re-read it...

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I was expecting it to be much sappier than it turned out to be. The characters drew me in and kept me reading, but the tragedy in their lives was either too heavily foreshadowed or too predictable.
