A Kindle short read.
A humorous look at what it’s really like to live, work, and play in the unconventional island of Key West. Though much touted as a fantasy-like paradise, reality is…well, a little different. This collection of true stories is an entertaining, inside look at life on a small, subtropical island.
Skeletons in the closet. Literally...
The book begins with a brief story of a childhood move from the city to the country, and a terrifying discovery in the closet. Then we focus on Key West, but not as a tour guide or history lesson. It's a humorous, inside look at the working lives of regular people, who really aren't that "regular." Colorful characters? indeed! Meet Mark the manager and his reaction to being transferred to Key West, flaming bicyclists, and drag queens. Get to know Capt. Bill the lightning struck (literally) fishing guide whose daily activities always seem to sound dirty. There's also Lyle the bear-like sailor and Neil, who has sore nipples (they were attacked by baby fish) and drives a workboat named Car-54.
Written by boating travel writer, Rebecca Burg, this mini nonfiction book was originally created to entertain friends visiting the island for the first time.
Short and silly (both the book and the author), fun and irreverent, this read aims for the funny bone and hits it.
- N. Bird, Key West resident
