"I did two things on my seventy-fifth birthday. I visited my wife's grave. Then I joined the army." John Scalzi draws you into his epic military sf series with one of the best opening paragraphs I have read in any fiction novel. He hits all the high points that I look for in a great science fiction ...
I'm giving it a 5 because it's the first sci-fi book that I've read in ages that has both surprised me and intrigued me. It doesn't create a world without explanation and it's that, how well is everything tied up and perfectly logically explained, that mesmerized me. The action is real good, the mai...
(refers to audiobook)"A pulpy, well-characterized and written story"While it might be confusing to compare his book to "Starship Troopers" I do think that John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" owes much to Heinlein's story. Not so much in terms of politics or satire, but in charting an enjoyable course stra...
I had a lot of fun with this - it's been a while since I've sat with a pocket paperback and just plowed through it. It's smart and well-considered sci-fi, rising above the traps of the genre while also making sure to hit all of the proper marks you'd expect in a first-time-out sort of adventure. S...

Scalzi has an incredible mind who has a fantastic writing ability he created a fairly complex world without it feeling so. Part of what was so ...
This book got better as it went along. I almost put it down about a quarter of the way through. The dialogue at the beginning was a bit too much like TV sitcom banter for my liking. All the characters seemed to have the exact same sense of humor (based on reading his blog, decidedly Scalzi's humor)....
There was just too much chemistry and physics-speak. The final storyline, which I thought was really interesting, was over so quickly that it almost wasn't worth being in the book. Overall, I was just really confused and bored.
Sure. There are space ships on the cover and an exploding planet on the cover - not usually my thing. But like Scalzi's Red Shirts, it was an entertaining read.

I guess there’s nothing in it that isn’t implied by the book’s title but still, I like it.Old Man’s War is the story of John Perry who,...
