2 1/2 *This basically a collection of short stories that sometimes have a lot to do with Olive Kitteridge and at other times, very little. I'm not sure what I was expecting other than having a book named Olive Kitteridge be about Olive Kitteridge.

I must be honest it took a bit of time and a live book club discussion for me to improve my opinion of the book and thus my review. I hated this book when I first started it and couldn't figure out the point of it..luckily, I gave it time.

"Who does not have their basket of trips?" Who indeed. I think that's the line that will stay with me long after I've forgotten the rest of the book. I got a big kick out of the parrot trained to say "Praise Jesus" whenever anyone says a swear word. I wonder if you could really train a bird like t...

This powerful book explores almost every human fault, foible and dysfunction brilliantly. It is not a happy book since it is a book about loss and disappointment. Not really my cup of tea. The writing is wonderful and the characters are very real, but the lack of resolution bothered me. Plus, no one's life is so gritty.

The main character is different. You are never sure to root for her or not.

I am reminded very strongly of Sarah Orne Jewett and Strout's Maine is the future of Jewett's country of pointed firs. Much like Ursula Hegi, 'Olive Kitteridge' is made up of small vignettes exploring the lives of a community. I described this book to a friend like people watching, only reading -- g...

Olive, although unlikeable, is unforgettable, which is probably one of the reasons it won the Pulitzer.

A well-written book, but not all that memorable for me. The characters were interesting and real, sometimes their stories were worth a read, but in hindsight, I can't pinpoint anything I loved about this work. Also, I was a bit miffed about the "Olive Kitteridge connection." Many times it seemed as...
