This book was a real downer! I loved his book Atonement and figured I would venture into some of his other books..I have not found the satisfaction (in fact, quite the opposite)of my love of Atonement.

Very well-written examination of what happens when two people who love each other very much fail to communicate. Excruciating and claustrophobic and horribly sad and exquisitely harrowing. I don't think I liked it at all. I certainly loathed the characters, even as I felt sorry for them.I have no id...

This deceptively light novella describes the events of Florence and Edward’s disastrous honeymoon night in 1962, interspersed with details of their childhoods and courtship to suggest how those influenced what happened. It is clinical and understated from the start: “The wedding... had gone well” an...

Excellent book. A tough read in many ways, but a moving one. It deals with a wedding night that took place before sexual frankness was common. It also shows us the lives of the couple involved leading up to and from that fateful moment.

Both are virgins. Both have little knowledge of what can or should be done and the result is not a happy one....

On Chesil Beach is a hard novel to describe in simple terms... or rather simplification of this kind of story misses the point: there is much going on in this short novel to admire. You can admire how McEwan contrasts the emotional strength and sexual awkwardness of two newlyweds, and their living ...

I really enjoyed reading this book - it was a pretty quick read and all the events happen in a few hours, with lots of flashbacks and stuff to tell the backstory. Awesome book, though...even though I wish things had turned out better for them.
