I'm conflicted about this book; I'm wavering between 3.5 stars and 4, so i'm going with 4, out of respect to Fforde for his ability to so thoroughly and beautifully manipulate the English language and, for that matter, reality itself. This book takes place entirely in the BookWorld, save for a ch...
In the Nextian Universe there are, basically, two worlds. In the RealWorld, dodos are household pets and Neanderthals productive members of society, there is an active black market for cheese and a Socialist Republic of Wales (where, its tourism board proclaims, it's "Not always raining). There is a...
This was a little hard for me to get into at first as it is narrated by written Thursday, rather than the Thursday we've gotten to know over the other books. Once I just went with it, it was another enjoyable romp through the book world. Less political satire than the earlier books since so little...
More like 3.5 stars, really. As clever as always, but I think I'll be happy to go back to the real Thursday rather than the written Thursday for the next in the series. As usualy there were some super-clever ideas (Jasper Fforde really is a genius) and excellent laughs.
Fforde made a good decision in giving the role to written Thursday. I found that Thursday's character has became rather stale with her being the veteran can do all hero. Reading written Thursday trying to fill up her shoes was more enjoyable. I think the ending is rather lame, but after all those lo...
As you can tell I am not reading this series in order. I read the first book, to see what it was like and enjoyed it because of the literary references. Then when my coworker, Doug B. (he's the one who introduced me to this series), told me I should read this one next, and that I could borrow it fro...
It's a shame this book started off so slow. When the story finally got going it was good, just as enjoyable as all the other Thursday books. Could have done without the over description of the Book World, as quite a bit of it had no importance on the actual story.
Clever and funny, but didn't get drawn in plot-wise until about 100 pages in. Didn't really mind, though, because I was constantly squealing with joy over the newest Fforde-ian lit humor. Then it turned around and the story became full of intrigue and Next-ian action! And lit humor. Also, chapter ...
Slow start, but gets better and better right to the end. As another reviewer said, JF is sometimes a bit too clever for his own good, but once I got into the story, I loved it!
One star off of fabulous, because it's slow to get going. Fforde has written a book starring the written version of Next, and she's less adventurous, less brave, less quick, less sexy, and much more dignified than the Real Next. By taking her out of her own book and giving her some detective work, h...
