Beseeched by his dying mother to locate his father, Pedro Paramo, whom they fled from years ago, Juan Preciado sets out for Comala. Comala is a town alive with whispers and shadows - a place seemingly populated only by memory and hallucinations. Built on the tyranny of the Paramo family, its barren and broken-down streets echo the voices of tormented spirits sharing the secrets of the past. First published to both critical and popular acclaim in 1955, Pedro Paramo represented a distinct break with earlier, largely "realist" novels from Latin America. Rulfo's entrancing mixture of vivid sensory images, violent passions, and inexplicable sorcery - a style that has come to be known as "magical realism" - has exerted a profound influence on subsequent Latin American writers.

As I feel like I've earned a prize, I have to thank Linda and Dolors for their support! I'm not sure I've chosen the right novel to begin with. Apart from my poor und...

I've read some works on the 'Magic realism' genre and I can't get into them. It's so... disjointed and unreasonable, I guess. I read this book some years back and I remember mildly enjoying it; this second time I was much more critical about what I was reading and didn't find it as eerie as I did in...

Rulfo and Marquez appear to have capitalised on the world's desire to read Central and South American literature, in the magical realist style, about women who eat dirt.I'm just chilling outside that Venn segment wondering what the hell is going on.

Enough is written elsewhere to give you a good sense of the novella. There’s equally enough written elsewhere which speaks to this book’s foundational status with regard to magical realism. If asked, I’d only say Pedro Páramo is Our Town as conceived by Rod Serling and written by William Faulkner. ...
