Like many people, I knew nothing of my dad’s war service. I knew he failed his medical and was deemed not fit to serve abroad. It came as a shock to learn how much he saw and how much he did during the war. Nothing special, thousands like him, but then the more I learned the more remarkable it became. There are countless web sites where people are shocked after a death by discovering war records. Most find it impossible to unravel despite their efforts. That is when I realised; this history was already almost lost. We talk about Remembrance, yet there is so little we actually know in the first place. Remembrance Day is in serious threat of being trivialized as Internet-fuelled kids distort the memory and the very purpose. It is time to put something on record before it is lost forever
