I enjoyed Rendezvous with Rama immensely, and also plowed through it in two days, despite reading two other books at the same time. Arther C. Clarke creates an engrossing world and populates with interesting mysteries - and to me, the most interesting was the utter lack of interest in humans, the co...
i like world-building in science fiction and fantasy. in these modern times, extensive world-building is commonly derided... it is often seen as a lazy way to create a world, telling not showing, an author so in love with something they've built that they just want to describe instead of allowing th...
So I started reading this thinking it was going to be Clarke's "big one", one in which his genius would really blow me away, but I ended up with a general feeling of being slightly underwhelmed.Throughout the book it was mildly enjoyable, mysterious and engaging but at no point did I ever feel the e...
This is a typical hard-SF novel from Arthur C. Clarke. Clarke was famous for epic science and exploration (e.g., "2001"), but not for his characterization, and it shows here. While a planet-sized alien artifact flying through the solar system should engender a sense of awe, I found myself bored thro...
This is one of those classics of science fiction that you would think I would have read by now. Well, I am hoping to get to it now. I found my copy really cheap in the second hand store. We'll see how it goes. * * * *It was not as riveting as I thought it would be. While the science is good, i.e. Cl...
Giant alien spaceship is sighted. People go and check it out. It's full of cool stuff. Clarke adds some sex to show that he isn't just a holdout from the Golden Age, but his heart's not in it. As soon as they've finished, he wants to go out and explore the spaceship again. I can see his girlfriend r...
Goshdarnnit. Stargate Universe kinda spoiled the ending of this book for me. But that's okay. The book was still quite enjoyable and had me turning the pages rapidly to discover what would be found aboard the ginormous cylindrical ship that slowed down near Mercury. Now I just need a cheat sheet to...
I really liked this book...kept finding myself thinking about different events, etc.Although the characters were a little flat, the main character, Rama herself, was glorious. I loved how all the other characters reactions eemed to define her even better in my head.Pure sci-fi enjoyment.
