Since this book was originally published in the 40s, it's impossible not to think of family history and the passage of time while reading it. There is humor, because Sal and a young bear switch places, to their mothers' surprise. There are also opportunities for lots of interesting conversations wit...

Aw, it's supercute. Echoes of Mark Twain- there's the surface jokes, and then underneath there's this wry, straight-faced but deeply humorous narrative voice that gives it its real worth. That makes it sound much more of a big deal than it is. It's a sweet children's book from the '40s.

A rather simple story about picking blueberries done in some amazing blue ink drawings. A beautiful story of mother/son time and the joys of picking fresh fruit.

A charming story about the convergence of nature and civilization. Mr. and Mrs. Mallard struggle to find a suitable place to raise their young (what parent can't relate to this?) They eventually settle in Boston - mainly out of exhaustion and encroaching time constraints. Thanks to some friendly ...

This was another one of my favorite books as a child, and I know part of the reason my mother had me read it is because she grew up in Maine and because we would go back there every summer to visit family. This is definitely a fun book about every day life by the water in Maine, and it definitely i...
