The Rogue Lawyer is John Grisham’s 30th novel, and his fifth straigh legal thriller after Calico Joe, his baseball novel. It is his second street lawyer novel, the first being appropriately enough, “Street Lawyer,” with a different protagonist. It is also a continuation of what appears to be a trend in Grisham’s books: Having the protagonist narrate the story in a first person narrative.

The book follows the street lawyer, Sebastian Rudd, in a place called, “the City”, with its corrupt politicians, police, judges, gangs, drug dealers, and other riff-raff. A lot of the latter are Rudd’s clients, which makes him persona non grata to many of the City’s law enforcement and judicial personnel.

The book focuses on five cases in Rudd’s client portfolio: A man falsely accused of murdering two young girls, a botched SWAT invasion of an elderly couple’s home, the kidnapping of a police chief’s daughter, the murder trial of a UFC cage fighter that Rudd had once invested in, and the escape of a convicted murderer just minutes away from his execution.

The drama of the five cases swirl around Rudd’s own personal issues. He has a child custody issue with an ex-wife, and his son is used as a pawn in the abduction of the daughter of an assistant chief of police.

The story zips along briskly in the typical John Grisham legal thriller pace, where the very short chapters leave the reader breathless, and raring to see what happens next. The main character, Sebastian Rudd, seems to have more personality defects than winning qualities. But because of the despicable nature of some of Rudd’s enemies, and yes, clients, he comes across as an unlikely, if reluctant, hero.
