This book is based on lectures given in 1928 by the author on the subject of women and literature. The author was already recognized at the time as a gifted and successful writer, and she was invited to speak to two women's colleges at Cambridge and share her experience and wisdom to the next gener...

I hadn't really made up my mind about how I feel about Virginia Woolf, until now, that is. This book definitely showed her genius and I loved it. I enjoyed reading about the history of women writers including one of my favourites, George Eliot, and how they have been suppressed systematically by pat...

Another book that sets out to talk about writing, but ends up talking about life. A quarter of the way through: I wish I had read this at 18 and again every decade since. EASILY 5 stars now. Having finished, a high 4 stars.

While I did not agree with everything she said, it was a very interesting book of essays and I felt like I learned and gained from this. I recommend this for every female (cis and trans) writer.

Certainly a book so packed with careful observations of the circumstances of women in society that it can be read over and over and still enlighten! The long glorious sentences are a joy to get lost in.

What a triumphant essay! Virginia Woolf criticizes the expectations men and women have of themselves without being sarcastic or hateful. She uses clear, historical examples to support her arguments. This is a timeless piece of feminist literature, although she would most likely be unhappy with my...
