I'm having mixed opinions on this one. I really, really liked the Fae world depicted by the author, with its political intricacies, the various breeds of changelings and fae, how they interact, and so on. It holds tremendous potential, especially when you keep track of the whole favours systems, who...

October Daye, a changeling (half-fairy) whose life was ruined after being turned into a fish for 14 years in a San Francisco pond, has recently returned to human form and is working as a cashier at Safeway. Unfortunately, "Toby" is called upon to investigate the death of a fairy Countess, Evening W...

This book has some really good things going for it, it has good prose and really good world building but the characters... darn it, they are all so annoying and the pacing is horrible. It's a shame because this series could be very popular if Toby had been more likable, as it stands, being in her he...

Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire When I started the story, I was absolutely thrilled. The prose and the world itself had the feel of a Loreena McKennitt album: dreamy, full of old world music, but with a fully new age tone. The main character, Toby, is on the track of mysteriou...

I had been meaning to read this series for a while, ever since reading Mira Grant's zombie books. I finally got around to it and was very pleased with this urban fairy story. I was happy to get to know Toby and Sylvester and was rather surprised and interested in trying to piece together Toby's pers...

I rarely give out 5 stars but this one came close. Really well done, dynamic lead, well drawn setting, and surprising twists and turns. I was surprised by the culprit and intrigued by the gutsy ending. I look forward to more.

I always feel guilty admitting this since later books in this series are among my favorites released in recent years and are something I look forward to every time a new one comes out, but this book nearly made me give up on the whole thing after one volume. The saving grace was really our heroine. T...

Rosemary and Rue is a promising start to what I can already see shaping up to be one of my favorite UF Series. From the beginning itself, McGuire's novel starts out differently from most other UF Series - with our protagonist being turned into a fish for fourteen years. Thus, when the book really ki...

Private Investigator October "Toby" Daye is a changeling, a half-human, half-fairy woman, who feels out of place in both worlds. After a particularly nasty spell turns her into a fish for fourteen years, she has lost contact with her human fiancee and her daughter, no longer possesses a PI license, ...
