When I went to graduate school for writing, I learned that there are grad school books and authors. These are the authors or titles you likely have never heard of before entering an MFA program, but you're going to hear about them before they let you leave. During my two years there, no unknown name...

From Casual Debris. In Russell Banks's Affliction, small town New Hampshire police officer and local well digger Wade Whitehouse is having a crummy week. A crummy week following a crummy life. Overall a powerful novel, with some great characters, dialogue and absolutely fine writing. Then why di...

A collection of short stories selected by Murakami. Even when all of them are related to birthdays, each one is unique, and they produce different emotions to the reader. I loved this book for this reason, and it was a practical introduction to other authors´ work that I will read later.

Ponderous. Wordy. Awkward cadence. Repetitious.

Banks is a gritty, detailed, evocative writer and I'd give this short story collection four stars, but boy it was depressing.

Banks is an author I really need to read more of, because in this book of short stories I enjoyed the way he wrote, the way he put together his stories without always having a definitive end yet providing enough information that the reader is able to come to their own conclusion. These stories are...

The book is no where near as good as the documentary, but worth taking a look. The film Brief Encounters is very good. http://www.amazon.com/Gregory-Crewdson-Brief-Encounters-Crewdson/dp/B00BFWKE76/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1378936355&sr=1-1&keywords=gregory+crewdson

A collection of short stories with one theme in common: they're all about birthdays - and yet they are nothing alike. The collection is dipped in a sea of melancholia and sadness, as birthdays are often associated with reflections and a profound outlook on the life that has passed by. People find the...
