Catholic guilt. That's a term thrown around in my family a lot, and it's something that I identify with. If you don't have an Irish Catholic background, I can understand how you may become bored with the religious sermons and the shameful, guilt-ridden nature of Stephen's musings. This book revolves ...

I wanted to like this book and was excited about reading it; I was attracted by the lack of a traditional narrative and the book's reputation and Joyce's reputation. I enjoyed the early descriptions of Stephen's family, the descriptions of his school days especially when he had a fever, the question...

The book begins with an epigraph from "She Moved Through the Fair": The people were saying no two were e'er wedBut one had a sorrow that never was said. Those two lines carry the essence of the story. The long-term consequences of keeping secrets are at the heart of Reading in the Dark. The unnamed ...

A stylistically complex but accessible autobiographical coming-of-age novel. It definitely should be read before attempting to climb Mount Ulysses.

Even worse than I remembered. There were about five sentences worth of brilliance in the entire book, but they are hidden neck deep in a muggy mosquito filled bog of awfulness. Please, take my word for it, stay far, far away from this book.

Portrait of the Artist was good; good at putting me to sleep! Actually that's only partially true. The beginning, when Daedalus was a child just wasn't particularly compelling to me to me. My long-time suspicion that I'm not a fan of coming-of-age books (Bildungsroman's according to Wikipedia) was c...

A collection of vignettes that gradually coalesce to form a complete narrative revolving around family, death, loyalty, and love. Short, sweet, and stunning, with beautiful, simple writing.

I never finished this book. Come on, a whole chapter about how horrible hell was. And this book brings a new meaning to the term run-on sentences.

I don't know why I loved this so much when I read it in college, it has quite a few annoying parts. It does have some good parts though and also some weird parts that I think about almost every time I pee or go for a long walk.
