I must confess I am not a big fan of McCall Smith's Scotland St series. Several of the characters annoyed me and I find it hard to relate to characters who annoy me. A few of the minor characters in Corduroy Mansions annoy me, but I enjoyed all the main characters. Corduroy Mansions is a house co...

3.5. I breathed this book for the month it took to read it and it should have been a perfect 5 star classic. It was brilliant. It was also much too long, meandering and tentatively edited. Very glad I read it, though.

The Alex Rider series is probably targetted at middle grade readers, but I love them. Crocodile Tears is the latest addition to the series which stars Alex Rider, a teenage British boy who, in between school and sports, juggles a few critical missions for MI6. In this story, Alex has to save the w...

Wodehouse does noir. The underlying plot was not that strong, but it hardly matters because you're reading this for the piffle.

This book is amazing. I listened to it after listening to Dickens's Christmas Carol (which was excellent) and the first two books in the Bartimaeus Trilogy (which are enjoyable). This was like the perfect mix. The imagination of Stroud with the writing skill of Dickens. It also reminds one of Neil G...

Maybe it's hearing it instead of reading it - but a couple of times I cringed because of the dialogue such as "warrior maiden" and Simon being a virgin in his 30s who is willing to take a lover since Meg didn't want to marry him. But otherwise, it was pretty good and the narrator did a good job wit...

mp3 Unabridged and superbly read by John Lee.Dan Simmons is one cheapskate, tacky guy. I am verily outraged (hee, I do so love to be outraged from time to time) that so much time in Drood is given over to the premise of The Terror under the guise of The Frozen Deep. Flying under the literary radar l...

I thoroughly enjoyed the narration of Simon Prebble, which was delightful and enlightening. His voicings were spot-on for this very British novel. I was about half finished reading the novel when I thought I'd try the audio book version while driving to and from work (1.5 hours per weekday). Towa...

It took me a couple of months to listen to this long tale of rival magicians in the early 19th century. It had a long and winding plot that held my interest and one really creepy faerie. I'm not feeling as verbose as the novel right now, but I did like it.
Give me all the (post-apocalyptic) books
Read it don't listen to it.
