On my 13th birthday, I was furiously handed a copy of Amy Vanderbilt's New Complete Book of Etiquette: The Guide to Gracious Living as my desperate cries for Madonna’s Erotica album were sternly dismissed. Phrases of "Learn to behave like a lady" and "Beauty comes from pain", swayed alongside numero...

I cried. I am crying still. This told the beautiful and sad story of two laotongs aka old sames, Lily and Snow Flower, and how their lives are transformed by their friendship and life itself. I really enjoyed this book. Just recently finishing Memoirs of a Geisha, I was a little apprehensive. The author of this book is amazing in her way of portraying a fictional story between two girls growing up. It kept you going from page to page. The story flowed and kept me interested.

My first book involving the Chinese Culture. Historical in nature. I loved it! It was such a wonderful story of friendship, betrayal and redemption. I so enjoyed all of the glimpses into the lives of the women from the time period.

If there is one thing I know about Chinese movies and stories, is that there are no happy endings. This book just validated my theory. Still a good if painful read.

I'm not sure I can say I "liked" it, because it was so depressingly bleak it was unpalatable. Still, it was interesting to learn about the culture and traditions of China during that era.

This one follows the life of a Chinese woman during the 19th century and centers upon her contracted relationship with another woman - an intense friendship that is a source of joy and regret. The story follows them from the pain of footbinding, marriage, childbirth, surviving an invasion, cholera,...
