Always nice to take a break in the middle of a long book (Les Miz!) and read something nice and short. Solaris clocks in at only around 200 pages (I read the Kindle edition). It started off like a creepy haunted house story but quickly morphs into something very odd and mind blowing. Solaris is a pl...

I still haven't seen either film version of this novel, so I had almost no notion of what I was getting into. Solaris is original, alternately horrifying and philosophical. There are dry portions of Solaris history that are necessary to support the narrative, but derail the action, but I'm very happ...

A big hunk of this book is about meticulously describing the properties of the "Sea". I wouldn't be the first to call that literature and besides there's a better medium for that sort of storytelling: the big screen.I saw Soderbergh's attempt at the novel and wasn't impressed. Not sure if it was ent...

Some imaginative elements, but plot and character are inauthentic. Doesn't work - for me, at least

This was a fascinating and disturbing book. Both beautiful and horrific in what it says about humans--both individually and collectively.Interestingly enough, I found that the archaic sci-fi elements actually helped prove many of Lem's points, or at least what I took away from the book as being his...

Sadly, I did not like it. I blame it on George Clooney. He played the main character in the movie of the same name. I found the writing stilted and uninspiring. Could be a bad translation but just not for me. This classic SciFi story didn't interest me one bit. One reluctant Star.

Many sci-fi authors think that they write about aliens. The truth is, they really don't. Instead, they essentially write about humans. Most sci-fi aliens are little more than an allegory for humanity, a mirror through which we can see ourselves - maybe slightly different-looking, with more (or fewer...

11/11/11 Update: Reflected on it a bit more, and bumped up the rating to 5 stars. Darn those coercive, psychic ocean mind waves!**Despite work, an appalling lack of sleep, work, life, work, copious amounts of laundry, work, and MORE WORK, I finally finished this little gem of a book. I am giving ...

An interesting exploration of what it really means to be labelled "alien", and how any attempt at understanding another being inevitably goes both ways... It's also a rather good love story ;)
