In Stayin’ Put: Short Stories from Edenton, author/attorney Sam Dixon shares his personal experiences as a friend, son, father, and husband growing up in this small town in the remote Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina. From the pages of these two dozen short stories, Dixon reveals his love of the people, history, and the culture of the town he has called home for all of his life. His lifelong friend and editor, Anne Rouse Edwards, has added introductory notes to Dixon’s personal vignettes, giving a subtle depth to the collection. His stories, by Dixon’s own admission, are not social commentaries, but “descriptions of events in my life, according to my own memories.” While we may not know the people, those of us who were raised in small towns across America, will recognize many of the characters in the book. The book is illustrated with photographs from Dixon’s family scrapbooks, as well as reproductions of paintings and photographs contributed by regional historic associations.
