A solid 3 stars. Slow to start but the principal protagonists do eventually present a strong presence. I will definitely read the next one in the series. It's really strange to read about places you know, live near, pass through and read about them like you read a mystery set in Miss Marple's villag...

I tried hard with this one, because a dear friend recommended it and wanted so much for me to love it. But the truth is, I've never been able to get into "cozy" mysteries. I need more hard edges to hold my interest. Just couldn't stay with this.

A cozy, traditional detective mystery. I didn’t like all the characters, but I found them all intriguing. The most interesting ones were probably the least pleasant or admirable. And that's significant, because in this story it is the personalities of the characters (including the victim’s) that def...

Still Life is the first in a series of detective novels set in the province of Quebec featuring investigator Armand Gamache. ★★★✩✩ Note: This is a review of the audiobook. I wasn’t too thrilled with the one. Maybe it’s me, but - contrary to what other reviewers have written - Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is not very nice to his new recruit, Yvette Nichol, in my humble opinion. Granted, the young woman is Too Stupid T...

The strength of this book is the introduction to the French-dominated portion of Canada, which is indeed interesting. Add to this a relatively slow-moving mystery with a broad array of characters that I couldn't quite warm to (and a whole heap of head-hopping) and I probably would have ended the bo...
A Book and A Review #2

Great read. I read her fourth book before realizing it was part of a series and it reminds me of almost a Midsomer Murder book. I did not see the ending coming and thought the killer was someone totally different (I even had the motive down!). Will def. continue the series.

Very irritated with one character who was useless. Why was the young detective woman included? I don't know either unless it was to irritate the reader. Will try the next book in the series unless she is in it.Otherwise a good interesting cosy mystery set in a small town near Montreal. Wrapped up a ...

"Still", indeed..but more like "still waters" It took about 120 pages before this book "kicked in"...I was focusing on the townspeople of Three Pines, and not enjoying their company very much...too many neuroses in the air. Somewhere around page 117, however, something 'clicked" and i began to focus...
