I've just read Stitches by David Small in one sitting. I'm not saying this to brag about my reading speed but more to express how engrossing I found his art and writing. Stitches is a memoir which focuses on an event which no one should ever have had to experience. First, there's the disturbing pict...

I was looking for a graphic novel to complete the requirement for a reading challenge. Being that I have never read one before, I took my time in trying to find one whose story I would read (were it in words), and didn't come across as a comic. For the telling of a memoir, this was very well done. T...

This is the first time I've read a memoir as a graphic novel and I loved it. David Small did such a beautiful job incorporating the right amount of text/ explanation with the illustrations.

This was a depressing heart felt story of a boy who was born into a quite abnormal family. His journey to overcome his past, and look toward the future in achieving his dream as an artist.

If it were up to me, all biographies and memoirs would be written in graphic novel form. Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, The Complete Maus, The Complete Persepolis, Blankets; these are all near-perfect expressions of personal and familial experience. The power of imagery saves the subject matter from...

This book illustrates the power of the graphic novel. Words are few, but their sparsity increases their impact, and the illustrations carry the story easily. To tell this story in normal memoir form would destroy much of its power. Because the author is telling the story of his childhood, prose narr...

Holy mackerel. Just started this, but what a story. Freakin creepy.Update: This is just an amazing heart wrenching memoir. The adults are all psychotic but drawn so effectively that you see the generational damage as it's passed down. One of the most troubling scenes is the grandmother washing the ...

I like(d) everything about this book. The black and white art was beautifully expressive. The story was full of emotion and pain and the struggle of growing up. I highly recommend it to adults. This is not a "cartoon" graphic novel. Nor is it, in my opinion, for children or young adults. :: 5 stars ...
