Oh, people love this book, and it is clearly genius. I just still don't really like graphic novels, I guess. Also, I found it creepy and gross, which I guess was the point, but the art itself was hard for me to look at because--creepy, gross. So, I didn't appreciate it as I should've.

I found this book very disturbing. I still can't stop thinking about it! Very well done graphic novel, definitely NOT for the kiddies! You gotta give David Small a lot of kudos for being so open and honest about his childhood and family.Not for the faint of heart.... Otherwise recommended....

I was curious to read this, wondering how a memoir would translate as a graphic novel (wait, is it a novel?), with pictures to go along with words and memories. The book is mostly illustrations, with just a few words to carry the narrative along; when necessary, David Small resorts solely to images ...

Amazing. By showing the reader just a few key scenes from his childhood, Small manages to give us a vivid understanding of his early life. It's not pretty, it's devastating.I'm beginning to think that the graphic novel format is the best thing to happen to memoirs.

An incredible memoir, stark, truthful and the drawings were something else entirely. I think the ending the last page with a picture of Small's mother really did it for me. I wanted to judge her, but seeing that photo, knowing she lived a life all her own, with her own woes and her own heartaches it...
