Two and three quarters-Its difficult to really assess; at least with any clear accuracy. the writing was lush. I found myself in the Pit. Clutching to the red alligator, and walking the trails with the swamp man, sweat on my brow and the smell of decaying vegetation strong. The writing reminded me ...

I really liked this book. I liked the coming of age stories of Ava, Ossie, and Kiwi. I liked how this book meandered and stagnated in some parts. I liked the imagination of it all, as well as, the magical realism which added a unique point of view to the story you don't always get in main stream lit...

Slow. Stories about normal or semi-normal family life aren't my favorite thing usually. really interesting to learn about gators, gator wrestling, and the florida swamps.

I just w...
Goat Heads and Sand Burrs, P. Kirby's Reading Blog
You know what? Life is just too short to slog through a book that isn't working for you.I've got a pile of books waiting and despite my initial enthusiasm for this highly recommended and much lauded novel, the actual reading felt like my brain and eyes were stuck in thick, clayey, swamp mud. I think...

The title and the blurbs kind of made me want to skip this one. It sounds a touch too quirky for me, maybe. But Karen Russell is an excellent writer. I love the way she shapes the language to the character, especially in Ava's voice. The atmosphere is so haunting, lovely and foreign. The story is or...

A little too antic for my taste, quirky for its own sake
