Review | Pivot Point by Kasie West
Pivot Point - Kasie West

Book | Series | Author

Addison Coleman is anything but ordinary. She grew up in a place called Compound, she was born with an ability - a paranormal being. Addison is a Divergent or Searcher, her ability is to Search into the future when given a choice. So when Addison's parents hit her with the toughest choice, she had no choice but to Search into the next six weeks and decide which choice to choose.

In one future, she tries hard to fit into the Norms by hanging out with Trevor and his clique. While the alternate future had her dating the famous quarterback of Lincoln High, Duke Rivers. However, as she Searched deeper, she realised life is not going to be good up ahead...in both futures.

I absolutely love Pivot Point. Although i am not fond with the alternate chapters throughout the entire book, it was nowhere near confusing at all. The flow of the story was pretty much constant except for the introduction, it went a little too slow. Yet surprisingly, it's the slow flow of the introduction that made me enjoy Pivot Point so much. The flow was slow, thus it was easier for me to absorb the new details in the Compound, such as what terms are used for what ability and which ability can do exactly what.

It is also clear to the readers that Kasie West only had one main objective in the entire plot with other smaller objectives' help to build the story. The suspense was at the right places and the ending was excellent. The ending was definitely not a cliffhanger but it also let us on to the next book's plot.

Unlike other dystopian stories, Pivot Point managed to stand out very well with an entirely original dystopian idea. This book does not actually show us the dark secrets of the Compound or the paranormal beings that are working to keep them as a secret. Instead, Pivot Point showed the true nature of what curiousity and greediness can actually lead to while in the normal world, it's very different.

Pivot Point might be Kasie's debut novel but she definitely did a marvelous job with her first book. To those of you that dislike dystopian novels such as The Hunger Games or Divergent, Pivot Point is very different, you should definitely give it a try.

Addison Coleman: Addison is that typical lonely girl with a socially active best friend, stubborn personality, smart brains and rare ability you find in cliched written books. The thing different about Addison is, she might be lonely and only has one best friend - Laila - but she's not exactly the isolated nerd in school. Her ability to Search when given a choice might be rare but when compared to Laila's ability to Erase memories, Addison's ability is really nothing because her Search only helps herself, Divergence isn't really Clairvoyance. Moreover, Addison's personality did not change despite being in two different futures during her Search. She's a constant girl with a strong and stubborn mind, she knows what she wants, likes and has to do. For a girl her age, her brains and her pretty useless ability, Addison is very mature.

Trevor: In Pivot Point, Trevor is the Norm in Addison's future if she follows her father. Trevor is that fun, understanding, caring, strong, humble, smart and handsome quarterback. But because he suffered a really serious injury before Pivot Point started, Kasie did not really focus Trevor with football but as the first Norm person Addison got to know at a football match. Trevor is the boyfriend and best friend material for everyone and the fact that he was so calm when Addison "revealed" everything to him, it makes Trevor manlier. Sadly...Trevor never appeared again after Addison woke up from her Search.

Duke Rivers: Opposite of Trevor, Duke is very proud of his status in the Compound as that capable telekinetic quarterback in Lincoln High. Duke is the standard quarterbacks you read in most books but he is also very caring. Even though Duke approached Addison initially just to use her, he eventually grew to like her and cared for her. The only bad thing about Duke is he doesn't have enough confidence in himself and had to resort to cheating methods just to get rid of opponents like Trevor. Duke is nice but kind of like a baby sometimes.

Favourite: As sad as it is, it was during the time when Addison just found out from her father that Laila had died and Trevor told Addison to not choose this future because then Laila would survive. It was way too heart wrenching and very, very selfless of Trevor.

Least favourite: The scene in Bobby's house whereby Addison, Duke and Laila were there. It was so frustrating! Bobby became so greedy and became such a monster. Laila became so greedy and threw herself to Duke. Ugh, i have negative 100 votes for this part.
