Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman

If you're hoping this will be a continuation of American Gods, you will be sorely disappointed. Other than a God being in it, there is no connection at all.
It was a unique story. One that I'm still on the fence as to whether I can say if I really liked it or not. It was gripping, with each moment having the reader wanting to understand. There was moments of confusion though, several in fact. It had a beginning, middle and end though, so it came together alright.
Definitely not a favorite of mine, but not one to balk at either. Fans of Gaiman's will enjoy it. They get his eccentric writing. If you haven't read a Gaiman book, don't start here. Read The Ocean At The End Of The Lane.

Finished!
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman,Lenny Henry

I need to sit down and figure out which of my squares this fits. Spellbound, Magical Realism, and Darkest London for sure. Possibly A Grimm Tale as well? There are technically Anansi stories in this, but I have no idea if they're retellings of actual stories or just Anansi stories that Gaiman made up. Edit: Looking over the list of A Grimm Tale suggestions, I decided that this would probably fit that category. Which, since the square was called today, would mean that I get to mark another square when I get home. Nice!

Status update: 1 hour and 24 minutes left
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman,Lenny Henry

The "little old lady" magical sessions make me think of Terry Pratchett's witches, with all of the spell ingredient substitutions. Mrs. Higgler is a bit Nanny Ogg-ish, and Mrs. Dunwiddy is more Granny Weatherwax.

Halloween Bingo has begun, and I'm just reading everything at once
Days Gone Bad - Eric R. Asher
Ao Oni - Kenji Kuroda,Karin Suzuragi,Alexander Keller-Nelson
House of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman,Lenny Henry

This is everything I have going for Halloween Bingo right now. The way House of Leaves is going, I'll be lucky if I finish it by the end of the game. Anansi Boys is for listening at work and during my more and more infrequent gym visits. Ao Oni is currently on my phone - it's my latest J-Novel Club attempt. And Days Gone Bad, one of my Book Bonanza purchases, is for reading at home.

Possibly my first Halloween Bingo book
Anansi Boys - Neil Gaiman,Lenny Henry

This is a little over 10 hours long, and I haven't had much time lately for listening to audiobooks, so I'll probably finish this late enough for it to count as my first Halloween Bingo book.

I'll be following the same personal rule I followed last year. When I finish a book, I figure out which unmarked/unread squares it could work for and wait until one of them is called. Then the book is automatically used for that square. I only read for specific squares if they've already been called.

It's been a while since I last read this. If I remember right, it might work for Darkest London. And maybe Magical Realism? (I admit, unless it comes from a "magical realism" book list, I'm not 100% sure what counts as Magical Realism. 176 users on Goodreads tagged this with "magical realism," but that wasn't enough people to bump "magical realism" up to being one of its top genres.)
