Dog at the Door (Animal Ark #25) - Ben M. Baglio

For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle

Similar to the other Animal Ark books, but definitely a little heavier than some of the other ones I have read.

In this book, a pregnant golden retriever is left outside Animal Ark. Mandy and her parents work together to solve the mystery as well as help deliver and care for the puppies.

The thing I don't like about this series is that it really feels like it is written by a grownup. You are under no illusion that you are inside a child's head. The children in the book speak like adults and use idioms, which kids don't really do. The children are very grown up and not very believable.

I also thought the end was a bit of a stretch. It was entirely predictable, right down to what happens with Vera Morley and Kenneth Samuels, and just did not seem realistic.

Overall, a nice story, but there are definitely some spots that may be difficult for some young readers.

SPOILER

One of the puppies is stillborn and another dies within days of being born. The scenes are well-written, but it may be helpful information for parents to know before giving it to their children so they can make an informed decision on if their child could handle it or not.

END SPOILER

Beagle in a Backpack - Ben M. Baglio

This was a cute read. The story was interesting and filled with lots of twists and turns.

But I felt like the story really dragged out. The plot was all over the place between trying to find Amber and Frisbee as well as figuring out what was wrong with Portia. Both were interesting plot lines, but including both in one book made it feel like too much.

I also couldn't help but dislike Mandy's character. Her love of animals was amiable, but she felt like too much of a grown up. The way she talked and worried about everything made it hard to relate to her (even for me as a "grown up"). Everything about her felt too serious for a children's book.

I also didn't like how Mandy's parents treated her like a grown up. They'd tell her to do something, she'd argue, and they'd realize she was right and let her do her own thing (no matter how irresponsible or dangerous). This felt highly unrealistic. I wanted them to act like real parents at some point.

Overall, an okay read. There is no denying that Frisbee is adorable.

Colt in the Cave - Ben M. Baglio

I found a copy of this book in the Lending Library. I haven't read any of the Animal Ark Hauntings books before this, but I remember having a few Animal Ark books growing up

Overall, the story was interesting. Without giving too much away, the ending did not come as much of a surprise given that it is a Hauntings book. But I still enjoyed the story and liked how all of the pieces fell into place.

Not going to lie, the best part was everyone trying figure out the Internet. It really brought me back to the days of that awful start up tone and not getting calls while on Yahoo Messenger. Good times.

A cool, quick read with a nice ending.
