Friday Book Memes
Hemlock Grove - Brian McGreevy
If I Stay - Gayle Forman
The Ghost and the Goth - Stacey Kade

Flashback Friday (a book you read a while ago and loved)
I chose If I Stay by Gayle Forman. I recently re-read this book because I plan to see the movie. I found this book relatable. It shows you how your life can change quickly and how one decision can affect your whole life. It's about a girl who has a great life, a good family, she's a talented musician, and she even has a boyfriend she adores. One day a sudden car accident leaves her in a coma with some huge decisions to make about what to do next.

Friday Favorites (a favorite book, cover, author...etc)
I chose Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevey. This is the book I'm currently reading and would be on my list of top 10 favorite books ever. I love the story elements and seeing his own twist on them. I love the television show too which is where I first heard of this book. I think there are some flaws but the book is great overall. I highly recommend it. His writing voice is very unique and the characters are unique and I love it so much. It's a book about vampires and werewolves and Frankenstein creatures all together in this one high school. I first found out about this book while watching the series on Netflix. I recommend the television series as well. They do a great job sticking close to the book. The second season was released July 11th and with no second book to go off of, they have to make it up which should be interesting.

First Sentence Friday
The first real sentence of Hemlock Grove is: 'The night after the Harvest Moon, the body was discovered.'

Creepy, right? I love it!

The Friday 44 (turn to page 44 and choose a sentence that has an impact)
Here are two from Hemlock Grove:
"Today I have seen the dragon."

It's sort of a tagline said throughout the novel but I'm not going to give any spoilers.
And I liked this one...
'Roman attempted something like a smile, it was like lifting a thousand pounds overhead.'

It was a funny way of describing trying to smile when you don't feel like smiling.

Falling Behind Friday (a book that has been on your TBR shelf forever)
I chose The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade because it has been waiting forever and I'm going to read it next after what I'm currently reading. I got it on sale and decided to give it a chance though it was more girly than I usually like to read. It's about a popular girl who becomes a ghost and the only one who can see her is this goth boy. The end up falling in love.

What type of Haruki Murakami Character are you?

I got Foxy Older Mentor Living In A Decrepit Country Inn!

  1. You’re Hoshino, or Miu, or Colorless Tsukuru’s older suitor. The world (like Murakami’s novels) seem cluttered with love-lorn twentysomethings wondering if they’ll die alone. You’ll lived and seen enough to remind them that things will work out, that life is long. You’re patient with more inexperienced and neurotic people, who are drawn to your wisdom and unflappability.

Of course, this is the character from his new book which hasn't been translated into English yet. So I have no idea how accurate it is. Can't wait for it (August I think).

Top 5 Favorite Debut Novels

Friday Favorites is a weekly feature at The Quiet Girl Talks where you list your five favorite things (and why) for each weekly theme. Anybody can do it, just check the themes on the Features page ahead of time.

This week's theme is...
Debut Novels

Night Circus

By: Erin Morgenstern

Debut: September 13, 2011
This is a beautiful story about two magicians who fall in love but because of a childhood rivalry pitted against them by their instructors, they'll have to make a choice that has dangerous consequences, leaving the lives of everyone, from performers and patrons, hanging in the balance.

By: Susan Ee

Debut: May 21, 2011
This was a kick ass book and I'm glad it's a series. In a modern world that has now been destroyed and taken over by angels of the apocalypse, Penryn does everything she can to save her sister that was taken by the angels, even if that means making a deal with an enemy angel named Raffe.

By: Sara Gruen

Debut: April 9, 2007
Oh how I love this book! I think I have read it twice and watched the movie about 4 times. It's a historical fiction about a circus that has rules, if those rules aren't followed you will find yourself homeless, jobless or even dead! "For Jacob Jankowski it was his salvation and his living hell."

By: J.K. Rowling

Debut: November 1, 2003
There's no way that this book would not be a top 5 most favorite debuts! This brilliant book is about a boy and his wizard friends and their school, Howarts . Made into a wonderful series where you follow Harry and the gang on their adventure to save their magical world from the hands of Harry's sworn enemy, Voldemort.

By: J.R.R. Tolkien

Debut: 1937
A classic story that was a stepping stone for so many fantasy debuts to come. One that made hobbits, elves and goblins ever so popular. An epic fantasy that takes you on an adventure through the world of Middle-Earth. Where hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, helps a group of dwarves reclaim their kingdom from a greedy dragon named Smaug.
