Paper Girls Vol. 1
Paper Girls Volume 1 - Brian K. Vaughan,Cliff Chiang

I had heard a lot about Paper Girls before sitting down to finally read the first volume. I liked the girl setting and the 80s theme. Even though I wasn't even born at the time, with all the current enthusiasm for the period, it is difficult not to like it.

I thought the setting was very nicely executed, just I couldn't really get into the story at this point. However, I would like to someday read a couple more of these to explore where it is going.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Good strong finish
Wonder Woman Vol. 6: Bones (The New 52) - Cliff Chiang,Goran Sudžuka,Brian Azzarello

This is the finish to the first storyline of Wonder Woman's in what was the New 52 universe of DC.

And it rocked.

For the best volumes (which is, I think roughly 20 issues), Wonder Woman has been trying to protect a mother and child.  She also found out that she is the daughter of Zeus, and has been made the God of War.

Also, the Firstborn wants to kill everything.

Part of the reason why I like this run is how the Greek gods are depicted.  Hera is a bitch but she has reason to be and she isn't a total villain.  Aphrodite is what you would think, if you pause to think about it.  It is just wonderful.

The struggle that Diana goes though are nicely wound up here.  No loose threads.  The twist is pretty good too.

Wonder Woman, Vol. 4: War - Brian Azzarello,Cliff Chiang

We get so much in this volume. We get to discover what happened to Cassandra’s neck. It is so much worse than you could think. We find out the name of Zola’s son. It’s not Wonder Woman’s choice of Steve. Wonder Woman and Co go toe to toe with the First Born, who proves just how scummy and dangerous he is. We find out more about Orion, who faces his own struggle of conscience.

But honesty, that scene where Diana calls Orion out about his sexist behavior, kisses him, and then grabs him by the balls is just awesome. Seriously awesome.

We get more of Hera here to, and it is quite nice. I really do enjoy how this series has dealt with Hera. She is too be pitied but is also bitchy and horrifying.

It is worth noting too that while Wonder Woman is wearing hot pants and boob armor, she isn’t sexualized in the same intense way that she has been by other artists. She is a warrior here, not a sex object. It is nice.

The highlight of this arc is the closing volume which is a battle between Wonder Woman’s crew and the Firstborn. The army that War brings with him is just stunning and a sharp reminder of what just a god of War is. How Wonder Woman decides to end it and the ramifications of her actions is powerful. Especially in the culminating panels of the fight and the last panels of the issue.

This arc is about family, anger, and loss. The use of power, the cost of doing good, and the need to stand for something is here as well. The book focuses on the questions of, not mortality but morality. In many ways, in exploring Wonder Woman’s godhood (she is a daughter of Zeus), we see Wonder Woman at her most human.

Reading this out of order
Wonder Woman Vol. 5: Flesh (The New 52) - Brian Azzarello,Cliff Chiang,Goran Sudzuka

I've read Vols 1 and 2 of this Wonder Woman run, my friend gave me this volume for Christmas.  While I have read the issue where Wonder Woman becomes the God of War (She doesn't want it, it happened because of stuff), I haven't read all the volumes between, so I can't comment how this connects to the larger ARC.

This volumes builds up to what seems to be a major war on Olympus as Wonder Woman eventually comes to terms with being the God of War.

What I like about this was how the various Greek gods were depicted.  The designs for Artemis and Apollo in particular are very good.

The central of the story is Diana's friendship and love for those in her circle.

Paper Girls Volume 1 - Brian K. Vaughan,Cliff Chiang

I loved this graphic novel. I was hooked from the very start. The characters are awesome, the story is confusing as heck but very intriguing, and the whole idea of the thing is just amazing. It is a science-fiction adventure set in the 1980s. This is basically Stranger Things with more time travel and a diverse cast of paper girls. Another win from Brian K. Vaughan.

One of the things I think this book did extremely well was show some of the homophobic views of the time, but also address them. Mac's character is very outspoken and says some not-so-nice things such as calling someone an "AIDS patient" or expressing disgust about a boy with a boyfriend. But each time, the other characters call her out for it ("You shouldn't call anyone the other f-word."). This was a good way of showing the views of the characters during the time period without accepting them or leaving them unaddressed. Very well-done.

The characters themselves were phenomenal. I instantly wanted to learn more about them.

Also, the artwork is very cool. It really draws you in.

Fantastic read. I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be checking out the second book.
