Freddie's Birthday Surprise - Eugene Bra... Freddie's Birthday Surprise - Eugene Bradley Coco
For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle

A nice book about a birthday surprise.

This is a Stage 1 reader book recommended for preschool to first grade. The sentences are short and simple and there is a lot of repetition to aid beginning readers.

I really liked that even though it is an early reader book, it actually tells a story. So many modern books are just descriptions of known characters rather than stories with actual plots. This one has a nice story.

This book is also good for emotion identification as it has nice representations of simple emotions such as happy, sad, and surprised. It can also be used to work on prepositions like in, under, and behind.

Nice illustrations and a cute ending.

Freddie Mercury: The Definitive Biography
Freddie Mercury: The Definitive Biography - Lesley-Ann Jones Reads like a People Magazine article

Maybe it's because I read Somebody to Love by Mark Langthorne first, but I didn't enjoy this biography as much as his. Somebody to Love was written without bias, without agenda, with the intent to put forth as factual a book a possible, and it was interwoven with the history and progression of the AIDS virus along with the history and progression of Queen. I left that biography fully informed of the man, the myth, and the legend, as much as anyone could know the intimidate thoughts of such a private person. But then there's this biography...

Bohemian Rhapsody was written by an award winning rock journalist, and it drew heavily on interviews with people that were within the band's entourage, as well as the hangers on in Freddie's personal life. What you find is that everyone interviewed apparently had their own agenda for speaking, often to make sure they set the record straight with previous rumors. It sometimes seemed very petty, especially when it came to the disagreements over who was with Freddie in his final moments. I didn't feel like I learned anything new with this biography. Maybe had I read it first I'd prefer it, but it seems telling that of all the people interviewed, his band mates, Mary and his parents seemed to have had the least involvement. The biographer makes Mary sound cold for evicting the occupants of Garden Lodge, but you have to wonder if it's because everyone seemed out for their fifteen minutes of fame after Freddie died, books popping up left and right, everyone except Mary who honored the star's wish for privacy and has kept all interviews to a minimum. Even the band had little to do with Mercury pals after his death, quite possibly for the same reason?

As with any biography, it is impossible to know what's truly accurate information, but the author did seemingly try to provide a fully rounded view of what Freddie, the man, and Freddie, the frontman was like. No easy feat for such a private individual who shared his talents with the world, but kept his private life private.

I can say that I left this biography still enamored with Mercury, and I am satisfied that any pertinent information needed to understand his genius has been provided between the two biographies I've read. Some people are meant to die early in order to cement their legendary status: Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix, Michael Jackson, and Freddie Mercury. Ultimately I am glad that an entirely new generation is being introduced to the legend. He is still missed.

Legendary Star-Lord Volume 1: Face It, I Rule - Sam Humphries,Paco Medina,Freddie Williams Solid enough story with good art. Mostly setting up the event that followed, though, so you may want to check out The Black Vortex at the same time.

Kunal, relative newcomer to the strange town of Harmony, has his hands full preparing for Diwali. That should be enough to keep anyone's mind preoccupied, but Kunal can't really ignore that he's nearly thirty, single, and still buried in the closet. Out of town at a gay club one night, he bumps into Oscar, proprietor of Harmony's only sex shop, and figures his secret is now officially out. What he doesn't expect is a slow seduction, or to have to decide what it is he really wants in life.

Why I Write HEAs.

If you're a romance fan I don't need to tell you what an HEA is. But for those who are sick of having to Google acronyms and feeling old, it just stands for Happily Ever After.

An alternative is Happy For Now or HFN, which implies that while the story ends happily at the moment, in the future there may be a change in relationship status. If I write HFN, I rarely imply it, so almost everything I write front-faces as HEA.

Note those qualifiers. I never say never.

So why do I write HEA? There are a few reasons.

First, I'm sappy and love a happy ending. I was raised on Disney, so I'm a sucker for true love stories and everyone finding someone. (Note: that doesn't have to be romantic. Platonic relations can also be HEAs.)

The second reason is the more important reason to me, and it's something I directly address in my upcoming novella, A Honeyed Light. (More to come on that soon!) Queer media is on the rise, but when I was younger, it was really, really difficult to find queer books or movies that ended happily. Someone was killed for being who they were, for whom they loved. Someone contracted HIV, died of complications from AIDS. Someone was kicked out of their family and home, forced to live on the streets and often, that also ended in death or violence.

I clearly remember But I'm a Cheerleader, as one of the first movies I saw where despite the unfortunate decisions of the teens' parents (sending them to a conversion therapy camp due to their sexualities) love prevailed. It ended with a happy couple.

I was shocked and confused that this wasn't more common. Why shouldn't we have happy endings? So I started looking for more positive media, and found it in some anime, few books, and few movies. It wasn't enough. And I always follow the edict of 'Be the change you wish to see in the world." If I wanted more positive queer representation in the world, By gum, I was gonna put it out there myself.

So that's why I do it. And because often queer media tends to not include a lot of people of color, I make sure they have prime roles in more work. It's the representation I needed, so I'm doing my part to put it out there.

Freddie Milano lives with her partner-in-crime, two adorable and devilish cats, and far more ideas than she really has time to set down on (electronic) paper. She’s been writing since she could hold a pen, though most of the embarrassing stories thankfully never made in onto the internet, and can stay safely buried.
She loves wine, Korean pop music, tea, chocolate, coffee, mythology, and both video and tabletop gaming. An ESFJ surrounded by introverts, Freddie has learned the art of socialization in moderation. Besides, staying in just leaves her more time to write.
