Hunter Killer - Patrick Robinson This naval thriller has a slightly unbelievable plot, where France has been approached by a prince from Saudi Arabia who has had enough of the prolific spending of the current royal family and has decided that a coup is necessary to bring back a more restrained order to his country.

France agrees to help with special forces and subs to carry out the coup. There is devastation of oil industry which has huge ramifications for the global economy and energy supply. The Americans are not best please that they have been stitched up, and set about trying to right the wrongs.

The books starts of very slowly, I don't mind a little of setting the scene, but this took a while. When the action does start it isn't bad, but it does come across as stilted and not totally believable. The actions that America takes against France would probably start WWIII, so I cannot imagine that ever happening. It was a swift read though.

The Crucifix Killer (Robert Hunter Serie... The Crucifix Killer (Robert Hunter Series #1) - Chris Carter 4.5 stars"Wow, this one is good"That was exactly what came out of my mouth when I finished this book. The Crucifix Killer got into my attention when it popped up on one of my friends' update. I was intrigued because she gave it 5-stars while I knew her more on the romance novels she read (that's you, Anica!). Plus the author's name reminded me of CC of The X-Files series :). So I thought I'd give it a go. It only took me the first two chapters to be immensely compelled and decided to abandon all other books I was currently reading to finish this one. This is the first book of a series (I think) featuring Robert Hunter, a wunderkind Homicide Special Section detective of L.A.P.D. Robbery Homicide Division (he received his PhD in the age of 23 and his thesis paper had been made into a book and became a mandatory reading). Robert has been assigned a new rookie partner, Carlos Garcia, and their first case together is the return of "The Crucifix Killer" (known for the carving of double-crucifix on the back of the victims' neck). It's been awhile since I read a pure mystery/police procedural, without romance element, and this one keep me enganged throughout. The characters are likeable. The story is fast-paced and well-structured. The mystery is well-kept. Mr. Carter even gives a couple of things to throw readers off from the truth. I'm a true peeker, meaning I've 99% always checked the back of the book, even a mystery/thriller to find out the answer, but this one is able to keep me from doing that. At the same time, it forces me to keep on reading because I want to know the true identity of "The Crucifix Killer". I was truly surprised when it was revealed. I must say that I didn't see that coming. The only element that keep me from giving it the perfect 5-stars is slightly bit technical. Mr. Carter writes from different point of views, Robert, Carlos, sometimes the victims, or other characters. While it gives me background of their life, at times it also makes me feel like I'm being "told" rather than letting me "experience" it, you know? So I don't grow deep attachment to the main characters. In a sense, I also feel that Robert is a bit too, uhm, nice. I guess I like my character to have a bit of bad-ass in him :p.But it's been one of the most riveting mystery books I read this year, and I definitely will pick up the next Robert Hunter story.
