Just One Night: Part 2 - Elle Casey
Just One Night: Part 2 - Elle Casey

I loved this book but Arrggghhhh! that ending killed me :D It’s no secret that Elle Casey is my favorite author and there’s so many reasons why. One of the biggest though is that I always have so much fun reading her books. I don’t care what they’re about, whether they’re a romance or a YA fantasy, they always have one thing in common: they are SO much fun! Just One Night Part 2 was no exception. I love this serial and I’m really glad that she’s writing them every couple of weeks because I would go insane if I had to wait any longer than that for the next one. Especially after the ending in this latest episode.

Just One Night is the tale of the sexy but lonely Jennifer and the smart, no nonsense British businessman William. They meet in the first book when Jennifer puts out an ad for a no-nonsense one night stand and after rejecting most of the callers because they set off her “crazy alarm” she finally gets a call from William. The two meet, have a magical time together and it ends with Jennifer leaving unexpectedly. In the second book we find out that Jennifer’s wishes she had taken her BFF Mia’s advice and not even put out the stupid ad because she can’t stop thinking about William. She really puts her heart out there most of the time and falls hard for people who don’t deserve her so while she’s wallowing in self pity Mia drags her off to a dinner party hosted by her sleazy boss. She brings Jennifer as a way of keeping away from her boss’s unprofessional advances and there they run into William. Unbeknownst to Jennifer, William too has been unable to stop thinking about that night. He can’t get Jennifer or her body out of his mind and after the dinner party they head to a club along with William’s player of a brother and things quickly heat up.

William and Jennifer never did get to finish their one complete night together and it’s obvious that both of them are highly attracted to each other. The club scene is sizzling hot and it’s been very obvious from the first book that both of them belong together. They have so much in common not to mention their complete physical attraction to each other. The tension from the first book is doubled in this one and the smoking hot scenes are an inferno this time, it completely goes into total meltdown. So now that they’ve been reunited they can finally live happily ever after like Cinderella and Prince Charming right? Well not exactly because this loosely based fairy tale also has a wicked witch and boy is she a piece of work. That’s not the actual words I’d like to use but I’m trying to keep things PG lol. OMG this ending was sheer torture and I know it’s bound to upset a lot of people which is just a testament to how much people are truly invested in these characters and this story. It’s really awesome that Elle Casey is adapting the continuing story based on reader feedback so we all get a hand in shaping this story. As soon as I get through with this review I’m heading over to her site and letting her know what I thought along with where I hope the story will go in the next book. So not only is this a great story but it’s also a lot of fun and something we can help influence. I love a good serial and I am eagerly awaiting each new episode.

This was another well written episode. The plot’s pacing was perfect and I adore both of the main characters along with Mia. I love the fact that it’s got a bit of that fairy tale feeling to it and I also love it that Elle Casey’s books always brighten up my day. You just can’t ask for anything more than that so I’ll close with a big smile on my face and the knowledge that I get to do this all over again in a couple of weeks :D

World's Greatest Dad - Edward Lorn
World's Greatest Dad - Edward Lorn

Sorry for the reblog but I totally messed this one up. I didn't even check the review box or add any stars when I originally did it. Also even though I've gone back and fixed it, my shelf still doesn't show a review or rating so I'm just going to redo it. I'm not sure what I did wrong and sorry for any confusion this might have caused :(

I just read this one last night and wow! I'm still thinking about it. This is the second short story by Edward Lorn that I've read. The first one was No Such Thing which I really liked. I don't normally read a lot of short stories. I enjoy them every now and then but for the most part I prefer full-length novels and I can't remember the last time I've read a short story collection although I have no idea why I haven't read more of them. They're absolutely perfect for when you just don't  have as much time to read as you would like. I've been super busy lately plus I'm still trying to get over this flu bug. My ear has been killing me and the antibiotics I'm taking make me so sick so I've just been having a hard time reading or doing much of anything lately which is part of why I decided to give No Such Thing a try. I couldn't sit down and read for a few hours like I normally do so it was perfect to just read it in my spare time here and there. So yesterday I went and checked out the rest of Edward Lorn's books and the second I read the blurb on World's Greatest Dad I bought it. I didn't even bother with the sample like I normally do. It just sounded really good plus I'd already enjoyed one of his books and even if I didn't like it that much it was only .99 cents so I didn't have much to lose but OMG was this book worth it! I would have paid so much more had I known how good it was going to be.

I don't want to even remotely go into the plot on this one other than to discuss what's in the blurb which is about a dad who's lost his daughter in the most horrible way and he has a chance to avenge her death when messages start appearing on his World's Greatest Dad coffee cup. I was sucked into the story immediately and felt so horrible after reading about what happened to his daughter. I'm not a dad and I can only imagine how hard something like that would be for any parent. I went from feeling horrified to being awed when the messages started appearing. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. I can't even express the range of emotions it elicited out of me. I've read full length novels that didn't draw as many emotions out of me. It was a sad yet satisfying story. I want to talk about the ending so bad but once again I can't. Just trust me this is one you don't want to miss. I mentioned in my last review of his that I think it's just so much harder to write a good short story than it is to write a good full length novel. You just don't have as much to work with and it's so hard to draw a reader in and make them care with so few pages but this book does exactly that. I cared about the main characters, their pain became my pain and I mirrored their anger. There was also one helluva twist to the story that I never saw coming. There aren't many authors that I feel have mastered the finer arts of the short story but I do believe that Edward Lorn has done just that. He is a true master of the short story and I'm looking forward to reading even more of his books no matter their length.

I love it when a book makes me feel. It doesn't necessarily have to be a good emotion or feeling either. Whether it's loathing for a villain, joy from a hero's triumph or sadness from their loss, I absolutely love it when a good book makes me feel and World's Greatest Dad did just that and so much more. I would give this one ten stars if I was able to but alas there are only five.

Wow, I totally messed up when doing this review here. I forgot to mark it as a review and how many stars. This is definitely a 5 star book. I just noticed it on my shelf so I'm trying to fix it. Sorry :/

No Such Thing - Edward Lorn
No Such Thing - Edward Lorn

I've been wanting to read one of Edward Lorn's books for a while now and I have actually bought a couple of them but I just  hadn't found the time to read any of them yet. Then I saw a review for No Such Thing and realized it was a short story so I thought it would be the perfect way to try out his writing so I grabbed the book and dug into it last night. Now I just want to state I have sort of a love/hate relationship with short stories. Any author can write a short story but not every author can write a good short story. There's a lot of reasons for this I think. Mainly I believe it's just so much harder to write a good short story than it is to write a good novel. You just have so much less to work with and it's hard to make someone really care about a character in just a few short pages.

No Such Thing is sort of a blend between Horror and Science Fiction and is very much a mad scientist tale and these aren't always my favorites either. I mean I seem to be the only one who hated The Re-Animator (Yeah I know, get line and give me a good kick but I truly did not like it). But still I wanted to try this book and the first thing I realized was that I did NOT like the main character. Johan Schmidt is just a pompous jerk and that's putting it nicely. At the start of the story he's giving a lecture and trying to get some investor's to part with their money by selling them his ideas on his research and quite frankly it's just not going very well for him and then after the lecture he's approached by a woman and asked if he'd like to meet her boss Eliot Von Lennon who is a highly respected scientist with a ton of money I might add so Johan accompanies her to see what he wants and Eliot Von Lennon offers him a huge sum of money to help him with a project he has going on and the rest is just pure insanity.

I'd love to get into the story more but I've probably given enough away as it is. I did not like Johan, he was pretty much a slimeball who's scientific practices would be considered highly unethical and dubious even if they're not strictly illegal.  He seemed patronizing, rude, egotistical but he was highly intelligent and driven. His attitude towards women wasn't much better .... at least not in the beginning.

Even though I didn't like him the story started evolving and the tension set in. I found my heart rate increasing as this sense of dread just slowly overcame me. The amount of horror just kept increasing and by the end of the book I was literally sweating. I was horrified, shocked even and I thought the ending was simply brilliant. I still didn't care for Johan too much but he earned a great deal of respect from me at the end.  Mainly I love this story because of how it made me feel. It made my skin crawl, it made me forget to breathe, it put me on the edge of my seat and it totally freaked me out. You just can't ask for much more than that. So I definitely give it 5 stars. I've read horror novels that couldn't do this to me in over 300 pages yet Edward Lorn managed to do all of that in around 30 so my hats off to Mr. Lorn.

Oh, there was also another very short story called The Red Crayon that was included and I loved this story too. Within the first couple of paragraphs I felt for the main character and all too sadly I could really relate to him. I'm not going to say anything because I don't want to ruin it but I will say that I imagine there have been many of us who felt exactly like that at one point or another in our lives. This story had a different type of dread to it that crept in when I wasn't looking and continually increased until the very last word.

Ravaged (The Hunger #3) by Jason Brant
Ravaged (The Hunger #3) - Jason Brant

I just now finished reading Ravaged (The Hunger #3) which is the third and final book in the The Hunger and I was simply blown away. I think I'm coming down with the flu, my throat is sore, my nose wont quit running, my heads pounding and I feel miserable but none of that mattered. I could not put this book down today. At around the 78% mark I noticed something very odd, my pulse was literally pounding, not from being sick or anything but from sheer excitement as the plot was nearing it's incredible conclusion. I could take my pulse just by touching my neck with one finger, hehe. I was on the edge of my seat through most of the book and the suspense was just killing me. I've said this on every single book review I've done of Jason Brant's books but it's always true. This author doesn't mess around. His stories don't beat around the bush, they just start out with one big bang and the explosions never stop. You just ride the shock-waves all the way until the very end. It just doesn't get any better than this. Ravaged had more than enough suspense, action and well rounded characters that you grow to love more and more with each passing book plus the pacing was beyond perfect. This series from start to finish was just a pleasure to read and one I have no doubt I'll be rereading many times in the future.

After the end of Consumed our heroes barely survived their encounter with the madman militant-psycho Ralph and ended up taking over his camp and now in Ravaged they're trying to keep everyone alive and survive the best they can. So far the lights have kept the Vladdies at bay but somethings happening, things are changing in the world and once again they find themselves fighting for their very lives. Will Lance and Cass ever find a bit of peace and a safe place to bring their child into the world? Will people ever stop making fun of Doc Emmett Brown's name? Will Greg ever stop saying Bro? Well great news! All of those questions and more will be answered in Ravaged.

I am so sad to see this series end. I've really grown attached to all of the characters especially Lance and Cass. I enjoyed watching Lance's evolution as he went from a depressed, self-loathing loser who couldn't hold down a job nor keep his marriage together to the hero he eventually became. All of the bad things in his life began to change the second he met Cass and he quickly became someone I liked and admired. Cass also had a very nice evolution even though it was a little more subtle than Lance's. Slowly she started becoming softer and started showing her emotions. Yeah she was still a badass but Lance helped her to see that not all men are jerks and helped to slowly peel away those layers of the shell that she had built around herself. Together the two of them were awesome and one heck of a team. I still love their banter and loved the fact that her term for Lance which is "dumbass" sort of became a term of affection. They were perfect for each other.

I was also really glad we get to spend more time with Doc Brown and Eifort on this one. I loved both characters and thought they were both interesting. Doc has always been a smart man as well as the wise leader that everyone went to for advice while Lance was just the natural sort of person that everyone looked up to because of his general good nature as well as his deeds. All four of our main heroes were instrumental in leading the group of survivors and I don't think they could have done it as well without every single one of them. You really get to see Doc and Eifort take charge and Doc Brown becomes so much more a man of action than he's previously been while Eifort who is still the best sharpshooter of the group shows her softer side. The characters were all well rounded, even the side characters. Adam along with some new additions were all extremely likable. Greg, well Greg is still a dumbass. I'm pretty sure he was dropped on his head a few dozen times as a child but really we owe ol' Greg a huge debt of gratitude because if it wasn't for the short story Lotion then Jason Brant might not have ever written this series. After he wrote the short story a lot of people sent feedback asking if he'd ever write more about this world so in a way we owe Greg everything. Doesn't that just really suck when you think bout it like that? Hahaha, I'm pretty sure Greg's response would be, "Awesome, Bro!".

I just cannot recommend this book or author enough. He's quickly become one of my favorite authors He along with another author who's books I love are the only two that I will completely drop whatever I'm doing to read. If I'm in the middle of another book then I'll just push it to the side to read one of theirs. They're just that good. I love how his books have so much action yet still have characters that you just absolutely love, characters that you can't stand the thought of losing and every time something bad happens you find yourself flipping ahead to make sure they're okay. Plus I totally love this cover. Cass looks freaking awesome with the Anarchy symbol and mohawk. Alas I've had to abandon all hope that she'd leave Lance for me. Lance is just way to awesome and I admire him too much. She's just way out of my league besides after all this time they now feel like family to me. I'd love to tell you about the end but I can't so instead I'll just say if you love a great zombie book then do yourself a favor and get this book and series. You have no idea what you're missing out on if you don't. Ravaged and the whole The Hunger series has all the classic makings of a legendary piece of zombie fiction. If they were made into movies today they would seriously be right up there with Day of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead, maybe even a bit better. They're just that good!
