This quote explains how Patina doesn't know how to respond when a girl who is sitting next to her asks her a question about her dad. Patina never talks about her dad who passed away other than with her family. So when Becca asks her if her dad still makes beets she gets a lump in her throat and struggles to give an answer. She is blindsided and tries to find a response.

This quote is important because it shows an example of how even though he was only in front of his sister, he was taught to show little emotion, to stay strong, and to never cry. This also tells a lot about him as a character and how he was raised. The people in his neighborhood may have been through a lot but they would never show this, they would put on a sort of mask and cover up their emotions from the world. 

This quote is important because Will is in the elevator with his father and he thinks that his father is now trustworthy. Then while they are hugging each other, his father pulls Will's gun out of his belt and holds it to his head. This leaves Will feeling betrayed and terrified. He realizes that at any moment, his father could kill him and he is so hurt because he thought his father was finally worthy of his trust and love.
