Good blend of romance, paranormal and mystery
Epiphany - Christina Jean Michaels
The set up
Mackenzie Hill moved to Watcher's Point, Oregon four months ago following disturbing events back at her hometown near Eugene. She also has psychic visions and recently they've turned violent. She also meets Aidan at a party and realizes he's the mysterious, handsome man that's consumed her dreams for the last two years.

The issues
Almost ten years ago, a serial killer called the Boise Hangman terrorized the city bearing his name and then just stopped. Two years ago, he resurfaced and a recent murder in Watcher's Point has startling similarities to those in Boise. Mackenzie had a vision about the this murder but has never told anyone about her unique gift and is reluctant to step forward. Meanwhile, she and Aidan can't seem to avoid their obvious attraction. He's drawn into the situation but has a past he's withholding, too.

What I liked about this story
Mackenzie brings baggage to the story but doesn't spend much time and angst belaboring over her past. She's trying to move forward and create a new life path in spite of learning that the man she believed to be her father wasn't so and is rumored to have been the father of the one enemy she's made since moving to this town. She's got good sensibilities and tries to do the right thing by the investigation, even when it has the potential of exposing her secret. Her psychic abilities were understated and perfectly tempered. Aidan is so appealing and doesn't waste time or emotions masking his feelings toward Mackenzie and she him.

The mystery of the Boise Hangman was in the forefront for the entire story, putting every relationship in question, though about midway I'd honed in on the likely suspect. It was intriguing and I liked how both Mackenzie and Aidan's pasts were slowly revealed, often having a connection to the case. There was also a very awful twist that nearly derailed me but drew me into the story even more.

What I wasn't too crazy about
The families of these two left a lot to be desired and the secrets they withheld bordered on being pretty cruel. They came close to being a bit over the top but stayed within the boundaries just enough to keep me connected to the story.

Mackenzie did a lot of weeping, enough for it to feel as if we'd crossed into the YA territory...not too terribly but there were times I wanted to just tell her to woman up! She also had a couple of TSTL (too stupid to live) moments, especially near the end. And Aidan's tendency to be secretive got annoying after a while when it was clear that behavior was no longer necessary.

The bottom line
I am tiptoeing into this New Adult genre, mostly based on recommendations from friends but this one I decided on my own. My gamble paid off even though there were times the story had a YA cadence, not much but just a little. The mystery element was a real draw and I found that aspect very interesting. I liked the romance and the wisp of the paranormal with Mackenzie's psychic gift, especially since it was within reason. I didn't know this was the beginning of a series and am pretty happy about that. I will definitely be reading the next book.

(I received an ARC from the author)

Epiphany - Christina Jean Michaels A very hectic and crushing story. Mystery/thriller mixed with Paranormal Michaels really bought the story to life in a compelling way.

Mackenzie "Mac" Hill moves to Watcher's Point in hopes at starting a new life, after leaving a boyfriend who doesn't trust her and a mother that lied about who her father, she decides it is time to move on. After months of living in Watcher's Point (a town to which her mother grew up) and befriending her luscious red headed neighbour and co-worker Six she's finally starting to let her hair down that is until she bumps into Aidan.

Staring down at the guy she has drew and dreamt about intimately for two years Mackenzie can't believe he is real and not only that why is he in town and why now?

All of a sudden a death of a girl who was tortured, raped and then hung is to be believed to have been the work of a serial killer from Boise and Mackenzie witnessed the whole thing... in her dreams. Mackenzie doesn't believe she is psychic but she can't come up with any other explanation. Then she dreams of an attack on Aidan on Halloween night the same night that drags her down the rabbit hole to the mysteries of Watcher's Point, Aidan Payne and the Boise Hangman.

WHAT I THOUGHT

I really enjoyed this book, and I was surprised i liked this book as much as i did. We are instantly in suspense from the get go, the prologue teases us so much that we're constantly waiting for the scene to take place. All the way through, it was a guessing game. Not once did Christina Michaels give us any clues to who the murderer was, but she gave a little things so we could come up with motives for everyone making us understand Mackenzie and Aidan's anxiety.

I loved 4/5ths of this book, it was catchy and kept us on edge but it wasn't until the end where everything got a bit full on. There was a bit too much going on for my liking but as I know this is the first book in the Legacy of Payne series that we may simply being introduced to what might occur in the next novels. The story held so much suspense and was focused on the killings and Mackenzie's psychic ability rather than her and Aidan's relationship... well, that is until the end.

The story is told from the POV of Mackenzie, a character in which i found stubborn but lonely. From going to having everything, a loving boyfriend who she'd known since fourth grade and a career ahead of her, her life stops in a blink of an eye as she goes from her easy going life to working in a bar serving Officer Judd and his on again/off again girlfriend (and to be believed Mackenzie's half sister) Christie. Mackenzie's guard is pretty high. She is very tough and very adamant when she tells men "no" but she is so mesmerized by Aidan and what he may symbolise in her life she lets him in quite willingly.

Aidan was a character I adored, he was strong, sexy and just masculine and i love that in a lead male character, of course he's only a dream guy but he was just compelling and he stood his ground. As he gets close to Mackenzie he is nothing if not devoted to her, as he tries to protect her the best he can as she is now involved in the Hangman killings. My only issue is that he is trusted so easily by Mackenzie and she doesn't bat an eyelid to his many quirky mannerisms.

About 3/5ths of the way through we are hit with a pretty big twister on the book, something quite disturbing and it was interesting to see how Michaels played this scenario out. I just wish when Mackenzie finds out about the truth that she focused not on just her but on Aidan too as they both would need the support to figure out the issue at hand.

I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, is was smooth and transitioned effortlessly I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next book in the series as I want to know more about Aidan and maybe he brother Logan, maybe the next book will be about him *fingers crosses*.

THE COVER

There is a touch of femininity to the cover which i love as if we took away the pink on the cover we would have a classic mystery/thriller cover. I wasn't a great fan of the font treatment on 'Epiphany' but I have grown to tolerate it, maybe even like it!

Epiphany - Christina Jean Michaels
“For all the times I’d witnessed the murders of other women in my dreams, I’d failed to see my own.”

Enter into the mind of a psychic as she realizes she is now part of the dream world that foretells the future. It’s a gripping place to be within the first few pages of Epiphany. A bartender and secretive psychic Mackenzie has run away from problems and her past to start over. Mackenzie is weary and not in the mood to indulge her friend and neighbor to party and pick up guys. She has been under a siege for horrifying dreams. Dreams filled with the rape, torture and murder of women.

Deciding this is means enough to tie one on Mackenzie over indulges only to toss her cookies on a man she has seen before. Only they have never met in the waking world. She has dreamed of him for years in the most sensual ways.

Aidan is tied to these murders. But in what way and will Mackenzie be safe with Aiden or just another victim?

4 Stars for a murder/mystery with a New Adult feel.

Epiphany - Christina Jean Michaels Rating: Solid 4

eBook given in exchange of an honest review.

I was drawn to this book by the uniqueness it offered in the blurb and I must say it really delivered! I read the book in one sitting and couldn't stop. The writing was fluid and every sentence had its place, I'm tired of reading poorly books where it feels like the author didn't even read the paragraph back. This was probably the book's winning aspect for me, the dialogue was smooth and reflected the characters well.

Mackenzie was a great heroine who wasn't the whiney stereotype being thrown around in books so much at the moment, she actually cared about Aidan and held herself together realistically throughout the novel. The love interests suit each other and it was lovely to watch their relationship grow, it was slightly insta-lovey but the intense emotions came warranted after both of the baggage they carried, they really needed each other and their connection was believable. Although, I wished they had time to actually just converse and learn more about each others interest, but the book was so fast-paced and exciting.

A lot of things were happening at once and sometimes I felt it was all too much for one story, until all the running plots tie up nicely to each other in the end and they all came to have a point to them, not just running sub-plots for interested. I wouldn't say this book was absolutely amazing but it definitely deserves a 4 and I can't wait for Logan Payne's story in 'Awakening,' in book 2. I have good expectations!!
