The Pub Across the Pond
The Pub Across the Pond - Mary Carter

Ronan gambles away his family's pub (in his defence, it was a 4 aces hand) to his horrible uncle, who wants to turn it into a tanning salon.  His 6 sisters, rather than seeing it go to Uncle Joe, raffle the pub off in America.  Carlene buys a $20 raffle ticket at an Irish festival in Ohio, and wins.  She moves to Ireland to make a go of running the pub and chaos and romance ensue.

This is pure chick-lit.  Heavy on romance, light on sex, with a lot of humour and some odd pranks thrown into the mix.  I enjoyed it, but it's long; longer than it needed to be and the beginning was a slog; I wasn't necessarily interested in the blow-by-blow of Ronan losing the pub, or Carlene's history of bad luck.  Once past that though the story picked up pace and I thought Ronan's gambling and Carlene's father's OCD added a much needed depth to the story.  The twist at the end was pretty effective too.

If you've a weakness for the Irish (who doesn't?) and are in the mood for a mostly feel-good read that celebrates, first and foremost, the power of friendship and community, you might enjoy this one.

Home With My Sisters
Home with My Sisters - Mary Carter
ISBN:  9781617737084
Publisher: Kensington
Publication Date:  9/27/2016
Format: Paperback
My Rating:  4 Stars

A special thank you to Kensington and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Mary Carter delivers some magical Christmas spirit with a "non-traditional" family--HOME WITH MY SISTERS —A heartwarming, twisty, quirky, and witty story of secrets, sisters, family, life, relationships, and mystery; with a modern day, “top-secret” holiday twist.

Yvette Garland is dying. Cancer. She wants to spend it with her granddaughters. The Garland sisters. Is to too much to ask to enjoy her last days on earth with her three beautiful granddaughters? She has not seen them since they were younger girls.

Her only son died around Christmas. (the girls' father). She lost her three grandchildren, too. She has not celebrated a Christmas since. She hates the tradition, but she is dying. It might be her last one.

Yvette told her young good looking neighbor, Austin Rhodes her last wish was to find her three granddaughters and bring them to her for one last Christmas. She would like to postpone her death until Easter, but she had no control over such things.

The three granddaughters-sisters: Faith, Hope, and Joy.Austin goes in search of the three sisters to bring them to his neighbor for her dying wish.

She believes (her son) is reaching out to her. She has to tell them the truth. She only has a photo taken in the middle of the summer even though they had staged the photo with a fake Christmas tree. The girl's mother had taken them away from their father, from her. Her daughter in law had destroyed their lives. The girls thought he was a drunk who abandoned them.

Presently Faith is 32, Hope 28, and Joy, 24. She made him a deal. If he would find the girls, there would be no Christmas. No tree, decorations, singing—she would not be spending her last days or weeks mired in a commercial mess.

If they follow her rules, she will leave the house to the three of them. What other strings does she have in store for them?

To the girl’s surprise, they did not even know they had a paternal grandmother and hopefully she would tell them where to find their father.

Faith was the older protective sister, a girly-girl all rolled into one. Hope felt safe around Faith and the baby sister they took care of. The girls were inseparable when they were young. The Three Musketeers. They grew up without their father. Their mother did not like their grandmother.

The girls went separate ways when they were older. Faith fled to California at seventeen. Hope had stuck around for Joy. Joy was the wilder one. However, as she got older she resisted Hope’s efforts to mother her. Joy ran off to Seattle the minute she turned eighteen. They stay in touch via social media and Facebook.

However, the girl’s father did not leave them as they thought according to their grandmother. He died in a car accident going after his girls, when his wife took off with them to Florida. They never knew. This is what their grandmother tells them.

Will Yvette make it to Christmas? Is she telling the girls the truth, or does she have her own agenda? Now the girls are stuck with their grandmother, using the house to force them all together. Granny had rules. So many unanswered questions.

The trip brings Mr. Jingles, Christmas hope, cheer, healing, self-discovery, secrets, wit, romance, new friends, family and surprises for the Garland Girls. This could be the "worst and best" of Christmases of their lives. Each sister has their own fears, desires, loves, and losses.

The joys of sisterhood:
“Older Sister: I make the rules.
(Like this one since I am the oldest).
Middle Sister: I’m the reason we have rules.
Younger Sister: The rules don’t apply to me."

Not your everyday Christmas story— similar to a holiday comedy movie with an edgy cast of colorful characters! From mental illness, suicide, racism, and lots of Xanax with flawed characters. It was a joy reading Mary Carter’s Christmas modern holiday novel. She writes funny and quirky mixed with warmhearted characters.

I head the privilege of reading one of the author's books several years ago and found it quite entertaining (she has such a wild imagination)! Since I do not read a lot of women’s fiction or romance (more thrillers, mystery, suspense), was not on my radar. However, when I saw this stunning front cover, and the author’s name-- was immediately drawn to it, and was delighted to snag an advanced reading copy!

Sisters, bonds, dysfunction, emotions, family, and their complex relationships. (with lots of heart). If you are looking for a "fun" contemporary holiday read (especially if you live in South Florida) like myself, where we live vicariously through winter books with snow-since we have palm trees and sun year-round (of course, I am not complaining). Put this one on your holiday list. Entertaining!

If you enjoy Dorothea Benton Frank “West coast instead of East”, you will love Mary Carter’s HOME WITH MY SISTERS.

Three Months in Florence - Mary Carter

Three Months in Florence by Mary Carter
Wanted to read this book because I will probably never get to Florence myself and wanted to learn about.
The book delivers the city to you and other places as well. There is also another story that starts out with Alex, the professor and how he meets up with Lena and after 16 years of marriage he gets the opportunity to teach in Florence, just him, not Lena and the kids.
She does meet up with him via the computer and he tells her of all he's seen and experienced and she is upset because they were to go there, had the whole trip planned out, for their honeymoon and now he's there by himself.
She has a meltdown and ends up in Florence and things take a drastic turn as she discovers his new life with out them. Things become heated even further entwined within the story of the city and it's culture. Twists and turns and you can't even see what is going to happen next.
Keeps you very interested in their story, from their past and about the travel. Really GOOD read.
I received this book from The Kennsington Books in exchange for my honest review

Not Bad, But Dragged A Bit
London From My Windows - Mary Carter

**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review**
Ava was dancing with her dad. She was 10. They danced all the way outside. Her dad fell over, had a heart attack and died. Ava blamed herself because she didn't know CPR. Her feelings of guilt manifested until she couldn't leave a room or spots would dance before her eyes. 19 years later she still wasn't doing well. She stayed in her rented home as much as possible. She helps the police and does sketches. Diana was her therapist. Ava's Aunt Bev died and left Ava her apartment in London.
Ava decided to go. Ava was a woman with an invisible disability. She could be caring, sweet and lovely. She did a lot of growing throughout the story. I liked her character as well as the other characters in the story.
It had a fairly good plot and overall story. It just seemed to drag in places. Otherwise, I did like it.

Meet Me In Barcelona
Meet Me in Barcelona - Mary Carter
They say that you can run but you can't hide. Secrets do surface when you least expect it. That is what is happening to Grace Sawyer. Her boyfriend, Jake, of five years, supposedly "wins" a trip to Barcelona. Seem kind of mysterious as to why this would happen. Grace is reluctant to go at first, thinking that this is very strange. She agrees to go so along with Jake, when they get to their hotel find mysterious clues as to what they should do. Grace finally realizes that is is her foster sister Carrie Ann who sent them on this trip. Why?? Well that is the mystery of the story.

As we read further into the story we find out more about their relationship and what the big secret is and if it comes out, could cause problems. I love Mary Carter's books and this one was no exception. When I read her books I always get engrossed in the story from start to finish. The descriptions of what ever country her books take place in, Ireland, Italy or Spain, you may as well be there as the writing is so descriptive. Each of Mary Carter's are stand alone books but I think starting with Pub Across the Pond and then to Three Months in Florence and then Meet Me in Barcelona will give you a great idea on the kind of writing and stories this author creates. Another wonderful book!
