Survey: Interest in literature is waning among today's adult readers

According to a new survey by the National Endowment for the Arts, 58% of adults read all types of books for pleasure, which means non-required or not for school reading lists. However, adults reading literature (novels or short stories, poetry, and plays) has dropped to under half, 47%, the lowest level since 2002. Readers over age 65 now have the highest literacy rate of any other demographic group, and participation in the arts (including books) through electronic media is at an all-time high.

Be aware that if you go to the NEA website for more details, the site itself is open but not being monitored or updated due to the federal government shutdown.
