Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch
Red Seas Under Red Skies - Scott Lynch

Series: Gentleman Bastard #2

Abandoned at 37%.

I gave a solid effort to this one, but I’m finding that I just don’t care. I can’t even really point to a particular feature that annoys me (ok, other than that supposed “prologue” which isn’t really a prologue) or say that it’s poorly written. I just can’t seem to get into the book and the prospect of another three hundred pages of this, even with the promise of pirates, is making me throw in the towel.

On to the next book from Mount TBR!

[Aside: Wow, that’s 3 DNFs already this year and we’re only January!]

Apparently this installment is supposed to be some sort of pirate adventure. The problem is that at 36% there are still no pirates. This book needs to be restructured, methinks.

This book has been hard to get into. I think maybe I've turned a corner now that I've gotten home and can read it in more comfort, but I was seriously considering abandoning it. I'm not entirely sure why, but I just couldn't seem to care about the characters or what they were doing. And that "prologue" pissed me off because it's not really a prologue. It's a random snippet from somewhere and I wasn't even sure I cared enough about finding where it was supposed to go to continue.

So I might just have been a little grumpy this morning.

Red Seas Under Red Skies (GollanczF.) - Scott Lynch

Better than the first one, and not just because I'm totally weak for nautical fantasy.

Huge increase in female characters, definite increase in non-straight characters. The boys being useless and getting into shenanigans. Bad-ass mom character. More scuzzy fantasy - my favourite.

The Lies of Locke Lamora felt like it needed tightening up at the seams, and while the nautical terminology and junk (whether it's legit or not) might be a bit much to swallow for some, Red Seas Under Red Skies felt far more streamlined than the first one.

High hopes for the Republic of Thieves.

Stuff's starting to get tense between the boys.

Also, I have to say - holy shit, the sheer amount of female characters showing up in this so far, in typically male roles. Love, love, love.
