I have heard so many wonderful reviews about this series by J.A. Huss and finally picked up Tragic. I must say, WOW! I am addicted to this series and will have to pick up Manic very soon because what an amazing bundle of characters. Ms Huss is fantastic with her prose and premise, very unique and intriguing. She left me wanting to find out Rook and Ronin’s past and then to see where it all went.
Rook Walsh is a nineteen year old that has nothing. Her mother died of a drug overdose; was living in a homeless shelter for two months and is running from her worst nightmare, Jon. With her last $10 Rook decides to splash out and buy the best coffee ever. While in the coffee shop, the table next to her is a bunch of pretentious girls that are flinging this and that around. Rook can’t help but listen. These girls talk about some photographer named Antoine and fling a card that lands on Rook’s head.
Maybe this is her lucky day after all. Picking up the card, Rook doesn’t have anything to lose, so heads to the appointment. After one look at her, Elise, Ronin Antoine all agree Rook is their TRAGIC campaign without even trying. The only thing Rook is after is money. She has dreams after all and wants to survive.
Elise convinces Rook to stay and have another go at the campaign. With a lot of persuading and compromises, Rook accepts the offer for an apartment and a job. For the first time in a very long time, Rook is feeling excited.
Ronin Flynn is a twenty two year old that has a dream job. Who wouldn’t like to watch models get changed, help them focus and watch as they model mostly nothing. He has a rule about dating models, but can never seem to help himself. Especially when it comes to Rook. The cheeky bugger that Ronin is, was supposed to watch over Rook and help her settle in. Rook is hesitant to spend any time with men alone and doesn’t give him the time of day. Ronin has other plans and locks her in. Rook is resourceful though and manages to find a way out.
Ronin is quickly finding he has a lot of feelings for this broken tragic girl that’s a mystery and seems a little skittish. He tries to make her comfortable and they start hanging out. When she starts her first official photo shoot though, everything comes to a head and the extent of this shoot is revealed. Rook isn’t sure if she should continue until Ronin walks in.
Will Rook decide to continue with the shoot? What happened to Rook that made her so tragic? Who is this mysterious Mardee they keep mentioning? Will Rook’s past catch up with her?
Amazing is what this book is, absolutely amazing. From the world created within to the characters that mature and adapt, Tragic is a definite must read. Manic is all lined up to read next and I cannot wait.
