Book 50/100: The Pout Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen
The Pout-Pout Fish book and CD storytime set - Deborah Diesen

This book has a nice rhythm and rhyming scheme that made it fun to read aloud, although its underlying message may be that you can self-medicate clinical depression with promiscuity.

The Pout Pout Fish
The Pout-Pout Fish book and CD storytime set - Deborah Diesen

The Pout Pout Fish is a really cute book about a fish that thinks he has a "pouty" face because that is how he has also perceived himself. After claiming himself as a pout pout fish for so long, a new friend comes along and shows him a whole different view of himself - a much brighter, happier view.

You could use this story in a kindergarten, first or second grade classroom and have students construct a "pout pout" fish, and have a creative writing sheet that says "I am a pout pout fish when..." that they would complete. You could also do a graphic organizer that has a "kiss kiss" fish and a "pout pout" face, and under each picture would have "I feel cheery/pouty when..."

Outlook in the classroom
The Pout-Pout Fish book and CD storytime set - Deborah Diesen

This is one of my favorites! Currently my daughter is obsessed with this book and I love the story it tells. The Pout Pout Fish is definitely a frowny fellow, who encounters many fish in the sea whom encourage him to turn his frown upside down. He clearly finds himself as dreary and will not change until he meets a certain Kiss Kiss Fish. She plants a kiss on his pout and he finally sees that he is more than a pout pout fish. In the end, he plants a kiss on all those he pouted toward and has a change of heart. This story teaches students that it's all about perspective. You could use this book at the beginning of the year to encourage your students to have a positive attitude in the classroom. It would be ideal to have cheery faced student everyday but some days that will not happen. You could refer back to this book, and remind the class that all it takes is one compliment, smile, or nice gesture to turn a friends frown upside down. This text is leveled at a O according to Scholastic's guided reading scale.

The Pout-Pout Fish

If you haven't read this book yet it will probably be the funnest book you will ever read!! I won't ruin this story for you, but the rhyming and poem like structure of the book is unreal! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this as an adult and I can't imagine how a classroom full of children will react! I would use this book to teach about attitude and how quick a negative attitude can spread to others! I could also use this book for teaching rhythmic pattern and rhyming words when it comes to poetry and songs! I would use this book any where from Kindergarten to 3rd grade!

The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen
The Pout-Pout Fish book and CD storytime set - Deborah Diesen

He’s the Pout-Pout fish with an “ever-present pout. Living deep in the water, where the fish hang out.” Yes, that is where he lives and in this rhyming book, a variety of ocean creatures arrive and try to brighten up this blue and purple fish but he greets them with a rhyming refrain about his pout-pout face spreading the dreary-wearies all over the place. Oh, he does look sad and weary swimming around in the ocean as his cheerful and hopeful friends arrive eager to bring joy into his life and he remains so until a silent silver shimmer comes gliding up to Pout-Pout. Without saying a word, she is able to change Pout-Pout from a pouting fish into someone his ocean friends will be happy to see. Sometimes actions speak louder than words. Fun, rhyming book with bright illustrations.
