On the Black kept my attention and I wanted to keep turning the pages!

What I liked: While waiting for release of some of my favorite series, I've been having a hard time lately finding books that capture and hold my attention. So, I went to my TBR pile and started looking for something to entertain me.  On the Black more than met my expectations.

I'm a sucker for a well written thriller that keeps me wanting more and more. I felt the research, characters and pacing of On the Black were well above average. I became invested in the characters more than the plot. Rice, a former covert agent for the CIA, has been hiding out in the mountains for 10 years but he's finally back on his former boss' radar. Rice knows where all the bodies are buried and his boss and former President want to make sure they stay buried.

There is almost a story within a story in the book. Abby watched her family assassinated by the mob while in witness protection and was taken by the head of the "family" to be his play thing. The Family's reach is long and they've been hunting her for a while. The FBI is also looking for her as a witness in the slaying of her family. Abby has learned how to blend in and get lost. A robbery at the diner where Abby works changes everything and puts her and Rice together on a trek across country. The CIA is looking for Rice, the FBI and a mob family is looking for Abby and now a huge drug running gang on motorcycles is looking for both of them.

The characters made this story and kept me reading even when there were some outrageous James Bond type moments. Mr Cage's research and pacing in writing On the Black is undeniable. The secondary characters were just as important to the story as Rice and Abby without overwhelming the reader.

What I didn't like: Here's the thing, I finished reading On the Black a week ago. I didn't have time to write the review until now. I remember the characters very well; I remember Abby's situation like it was yesterday. I even remember all the secondary characters. What I can't remember for the life of me is what Rice knows that make his former bosses want to kill him. Weird, huh? 

The ending was a little to manipulated for my taste but I do remember it. It just seemed too quick based on everything else that had happened.

I gave this intense book five stars. While some of it seemed far-fetched, the technology exists now. This was a fast-paced, suspense-filled horrifying book. Many of the characters were so well drawn they were easy to dislike. Dr. Spooner heads that list.

Sean Chiller, a Corporal with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Winnepeg & his wife Tracy have a daughter named Ashley who had a rare genetic disease, a variation of Cystic Fibrosis. They hoped that a partial cure was possible based on genetic therapy. They're driving with hope to Fargo, North Dakota in a snow storm to an appointment at the Gene Therapy Clinic.

A town named Berzerker was the first one they came to. They finally found an open diner. He went in & came back out empty handed.

"'They wouldn't serve you coffee?”

“'I'm not sure why. It could be the law, or the fact that I'm black, or my non-regulation footwear. Or all three of the above.'”

She flushed with anger. Where they lived it was a non-issue that she was white. When they traveled it was different.

Their car wouldn't start & they had to stay at a decrepit hotel that was in sad repair. The next morning, anxious to get started, Sean went to find out about his vehicle.

Here are some quotes that caught my attention.

Sean stood at the chipped service counter inside the gas station, receiving bad news from a gangly Swede with lube oil on his chin. Sean had walked over with his family, anxious to continue on to Fargo. Then he learned there was another problem with the SUV.

“'How long will it take to clean the injectors?'” Sean asked. The mechanic looked uncertain, his eyes darting around like bluebottle flies looking for a place to land.

“'Won't be able to get to it until later today or tomorrow at the earliest.'”

"Berzerker was a kept village with an electronic moat as impenetrable as technology would allow. Essential

in the social media saturated world of the twenty-first century."

"The General actually smiled for two of them, using muscles it looked like he hadn't used in decades."

I have read every Theo Cage book I can get my hands on. He has an uncanny ability to keep me reading well into the night. To know Theo Cage is to willingly lose sleep. IMHO that is a worth wile arrangement.

To the point - a review of On the Black. This is an extraordinary action tale that spans the country from coast to coast. It is non-stop action replete with some pretty neat techo-gadgets. I marvel about the author's ability to come up with so many adventures that flow seamlessly together. The characters, and their different impact on the story are a major high point in the success of the book.

I think On the Book is very good. Continuous action, multiple intersecting plot lines, and the confluence of the plots into an excellent ending. Of course I knew that the guy would get the girl at the end, I would have been bummed if Britt had died.

Take my suggestion and get all of Theo Cage's books. He is an excellent writer that will keep you entertained for many hours.
