The Unbearable Lightness of Being is not everyone's read. For one, there is so much to follow on this book that the true nature of it is the topic that covers about love, infidelity, sexuality, obsession and lust. Its about two men, two women and a dog and how their lives are intertwine from one another based on Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of eternal recurrence.

 

I do enjoy reading it as it is funny, enlightening and enjoyable in my own account. I do understand its philosophical approach about love and sex and communism, where one felt some lightness of what Tomas desires and the weight burden of what Tereza felt when she was with him. Freedom is the main exploration of what adults do to each of their own. Where else love is a burden when it comes to relationships (that's how Tomas views it), in many interpretations it views differently for other characters.

 

For me, its a book I am not sure who to recommend. I can say this book gives me a different view how things happen for a reason, and we have only one life to choose from and no other better decisions will make it better as there is no point in comparing any thing. In my own personal opinion, I do find this one of the better reads in modern literature.

I just found my new favourite! I'm still astonished by the flow of sentences and the way he dissects his characters  - with love that's not easy to find in modern literature. I recommend it to all my followers!

I think this will be a fast read. Something about the flow of pauses and sentences. Not sure if i'll like it, though, but it's too early to say.

Philosophy can be fun if put to the test in a novel. I enjoyed hearing different accounts of the same events by different narrators and the way a couple may have the delusion they agree on something important when in reality they have totally contradictory understandings of what it is. There were also some thoughtful remarks about political protest - about what it is that citizens of communist countries did and did not object to and the way Americans and Europeans can appear to agree but in reality have - again - opposing perspectives. I found the promiscuity without consequences and without STDs tiresome. The characters all lived in privileged worlds a step away from the lives of most people and their disappearance from the social world would not to my mind leave a lasting hole. so it was more a book about ideas than about people in my way of thinking, which may be flawed.

I had wanted to read this book for years, and I suppose the passage of time increased the height of the pedestal of expectation upon which I placed it. While I can't say that I am entirely disappointed, I can't say that it wow-ed me either. Personally, I found the work to be pregnant with implied pathos, but it remained pretty much that way -- implied. The characters seems to struggle massively with decisions and consequences of those decisions -- (rinse and repeat) -- so in all, it seemed like reading a very great wheel of mental and emotional suffering and anguish. The peaks and valleys in the plot were more like bumps on the road, and in spite of a few bright spots, elicited more wincing from me than the enjoyment of a smooth literary ride.
