D-Day Beach

My favorite Veteran's Day memory:

In 1994, I was in grad school (first time around) and a reporter at the local paper -- Bellingham Herald. I interviewed a very gracious vet who had been part of the Normandy landing. He was a gracious man with a lot of quiet pride. I ended up writing more about his modesty and the men whose lives he'd saved than I did about his personal actions. His family was so happy with the front-page story published about his memories that they sent me a very kind thank you note, which I treasured for years. They said it was the best piece ever written about his experiences and why he did what he did at Normandy. My writing made a difference in their lives, and in his, even momentarily. I admired his quiet strength, and still do.

Never forget the price that others paid so you could call yourself free.
